A cyberwar is brewing, and Anonymous reprisal attacks on HBGary Federal shows how deep the war goes.

Even while Barr was proclaiming victory and threatening to “take the gloves off”, Anonymous were burrowing deeper into his network.

By the end of the attack, Barr's iPad was reputedly erased, his LinkedIn and Twitter accounts were hijacked, the HBGary Federal website was defaced, proprietary HBGary source code was stolen and with over 71,000 private emails now published to the internet, HBGary was laid bare.

In this, was our first lesson: The asymmetry of cyber warfare.

Phi Beta Iota: Superb article that does two things:

1.  Exposes the breadth–the out of control insane breadth–of US spending on cyber-attacks against US and foreign software products, places, and personnel.

2.  Exposures the “paper tiger” of a seriously stupid system that can start fires but not defend anyone or anything against others attacking right back.

The financials for Al Qaeda “terrorism” against the US “Great Satan” were 1:500,000 on 9/11, now 1:5 Million against the USA.  The financials for cyber attack and vulnerability run ten to 100 times that.  The USA is a glass house with very dirty windows.  Never mind the “scam” nature of most of what is being done.  What really matters is that what is being done in our name is unaffordable and seriously lacking in integrity and intelligence. Cyber is the ultimate inversion–if the US military does something stupid in our name, those they seek to repress will do something intelligent against our civilian Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

For those who love history, this is a repeat of the US starting the Cold War.  It was the US that opened the fifty year wound and funded both over the Pole incursions into Soviet air space, and also funded the restoration of the Nazis in Germany, the importation of Nazis into US intelligence and military research, the resurrection of the Japanese fascists, and the development of faux terrorist groups in Italy.  It is the US that is starting a cyber-war without actually knowing what it is doing, just “because it can.”

At no time in history have morality and legitimacy been more important–or more lacking–in the upper reaches of the US Government.  The lunacy continues.
