General’s Defence on Afghan Scandal Ducks Key Evidence

WASHINGTON, Sep 13 2012 (IPS) – Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell, the former commander of NATO’s training mission in Afghanistan, denied to a U.S. Congressional panel Wednesday that he had cited the impact on Congressional elections in opposing the timing of a request for an investigation of high-level Afghan military corruption and its impact on neglect of patients at the Afghan National Military Hospital (NMH) two years ago.

Phi Beta Iota:   As most know, we consider the truth to be the foundation for integrity.  As Bob Seelert, Chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide (New York): When things are not going well, until you get the truth out on the table, no matter how ugly, you are not in a position to deal with it.  Now connect this with illegal orders and toxic leadership, and you get an “Auschwitz-like” Afghan military hospital.  Command, whether in combat or not, is difficult enough with unavoidable ambiguity.  To repress the truth in any form is to commit treason.  It's time our officers learn this.
