Robert Steele: The Education of Your Children Is Your True Legacy

For me life has meaning at two levels: truth, and family.

The truth is, as John D. Caputo says, “philosophy in transit.” One’s relation to the truth — and whether one places any emphasis on understanding the truth, defining the truth, living in truth — is the cosmic meaning of life.

At a second level, and I grieve that I did not learn this until my third of three sons, the meaning of life changes once you have children. Before children, one must strive to be all they can be, to contribute and impact on community, nation, world, and profession. After having children, there is no more important charge than to help those children be better than oneself. Balancing external accomplishments and internal family commitments should not be an option. If you have a child you have a mission. The education of your child or children is your true legacy — everything else is secondary.
