House gets green light for open source

The House of Representatives has officially jumped on the open source bandwagon. A June 25 announcement declared that U.S. representatives, committees and staff would be able to procure open source software, participate in open source software communities and contribute code developed with taxpayer dollars to open source repositories.

Within Congress, support for open source software has been growing.  In the next few weeks, Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) and Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) plan to launch a House Open Source Caucus.

ROBERT STEELE: This is one of the most exiciting developments in the US Congress in my lifetime, and ably reported. However, everyone has missed the key point: beyond open source software there are over 59 opens in nine major subcategories visible at the P2P Foundation Category page for Open Source Everything, and as discussed in my book being delivered to the Open Source Caucus, The Open Source Everything Manifesto: Transparency, Truth, & Truth. The Guardian profile on this matter has received 67,000 likes and climbing. Here are the nine sub-categories that change everything about how we design, create, and SUSTAIN our economy, government, and society: Open Data; Open Governance; Open Health; Open Infrastructures; Open Intelligence (includes education, knowledge, research); Open Manufacturing; Open Provisioning; Open Software; Open Space. What most do not know is that the Office of Management and Budget has twice approved a new Open Source Agency at IOC $125M to FOC $2B, specificallyto promulgate all the opens while creating open source intelligence (ethical evidence based decision support in the public interest, against all threats ignored by the secret intelligence world starting with poverty, disease, and climate change; and as more recently defined, to cross-fertilize across all the opens so as to transform our economy, government, and society with a combination of holistic analytics, true cost economics, and open source engineering. In my view, the Open Source Caucus could be the most revolutionary initiative in Congress in the past 200 years.
