Amazon’s 24/7 Hell Is the Future of Work

Working at Amazon may be hell, but so is working everywhere else. Or at least it will be soon. The blockbuster New York Times report documenting Amazon’s “bruising” white collar culture is a fine piece of labor reporting, yet its revelations shouldn’t be too surprising. What the New York Times reports about Amazon seems generally consistent with the ways in which institutionalized work is being reorganized all over the planet.

Phi Beta Iota: Amazon is doing the very best it can within the prevailing laws and standard business practices. As with Donald Trump using bankrupcy, politicians taking multi-million dollar bribes, and so on, this is done “because they can.” Absent a public rebelion such as Chris Hedges and Robert Steele and Cynthia McKinney have called for, nothing will change. Absent from Amazon's calculations are the value of the knowledge “by the bite” represented in its books (Amazon ships packages, it does not “do” knowledge). It is easily with the power of Jeff Bezos to fund the UN Open-Source Decision-Support Information Network (UNODIN), the World Brain Institute, the School of Future-Oriented Hybrid Governance, and more. It is easily within his power to invite Larry Elllison in San Francisco and Michael Bloomberg in New York City to join him in creating a massive online world brain that empowers every human brain with holistic analytics tools, true cost economics data, and access to open source everything engineering. Being vastly wealthy in conventional terms, we must await the possibility of Jeff Bezos having a spiritual growth spurt, an epiphany, in which he realizes that the greatest wealth is a prosperous world at peace, a world that works for all.
