ROBERT STEELE: There is a longer term context for the Oregon occuption if one goes all the way to the genocide by the US federal government of the Paiute. They were given a large parcel of land under treaty in 1868 before being forced marched to a small area in response to pressure on the Federal government by ranchers and settlers.  Learn more.

Some of the same armed “militia” involved in the Cliven Bundy affair in Nevada have occupied federal land in Oregon formerly reserved for the Northern Paiute. Ironically, the “legal” basis for starting a fight with the federal government is that sovereignty “really” belongs to Oregon rather than the Paiutes, who have seen their federal trust land shrink from over one and a half million acres to a tiny remnant of 760 acres in Burns, Oregon, where this current armed standoff began. Learn more.

Now come forward to the matter of “illegal immigration” by Mexicans and other Latinos. In fact the US fought a war against Mexico that was completely illegitimate, and it stole land from Mexico at the point of a gun. Interestingly, Latinos — not just Mexicans, but Central Americans, Colombians, and others fleeing countries where the USA — again at the point of a gun — supported dictators and fascists and assassination squads against the indigenous — have reclaimed this land without violence — as Minister-Mentor Lee Kuan Yew (RIP) has observed, “demographic trumps democracy” (even when democracy is completely fraudulent and a theatrical front for predatory banks and corporations.

In my view, the United STATES of America desperately needs a Constitutional Convention, and a Truth & Reconciliation Commission with a very broad mandate. It may be that the USA needs to be split in three: the original thirteen colonies, Middle America, and Mex-America. Alaska and perhaps Washington and Oregon will almost inevitably split off to join Alaska and British Columbia to create Ecotopia. Quebec will leave Canada, and the new frontier will be the First Nation and the territories, where one hopes the rights of the indigenous peoples — and their sensibility — will exclude all foreign banks and corporations.

We are at the end of Empire. Whether our transition will be violent or non-violent I cannot predict. I know how to achieve a non-violent transition — with electoral reform and the restoration of state rights — but no one seems interested in non-violence or a transition. We are in the hands of God.
