Who? Who?

An article like this poses the question – who is really insane, psychiatrists or the people they treat?  When readers finish this article, they may vote for the former.

“In a damning analysis of an upcoming revision of the influential Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health experts said its new categories and “tick-box” diagnosis systems were at best “silly” and at worst “worrying and dangerous.” Some diagnoses – for conditions like “oppositional defiant disorder” and “apathy syndrome” – risk devaluing the seriousness of mental illness and medicalising behaviors most people would consider normal or just mildly eccentric, the experts said. At the other end of the spectrum, the new DSM, due out next year, could give medical diagnoses for serial rapists and sex abusers – under labels like “paraphilic coercive disorder” – and may allow offenders to escape prison by providing what could be seen as an excuse for their behavior, they added.

The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and has descriptions, symptoms and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. It is used internationally and is seen as the diagnostic “bible” for mental health medicine… “The proposed revision to DSM … will exacerbate the problems that result from trying to fit a medical, diagnostic system to problems that just don't fit nicely into those boxes,” said Peter Kinderman, a clinical psychologist and head of Liverpool University's Institute of Psychology at a briefing about widespread concerns over the book in London. He said the new edition – known as DSM-5 – “will pathologise a wide range of problems which should never be thought of as mental illnesses.” “Many people who are shy, bereaved, eccentric, or have unconventional romantic lives will suddenly find themselves labeled as mentally ill,” he said. “It's not humane, it's not scientific, and it won't help decide what help a person needs.” Other examples of diagnoses cited by experts as problematic included “gambling disorder,” “internet addiction disorder” and “oppositional defiant disorder” – a condition in which a child “actively refuses to comply with majority's requests” and “performs deliberate actions to annoy others.” “That basically means children who say ‘no' to their parents more than a certain number of times,” Kinderman said. “On that criteria, many of us would have to say our children are mentally ill.”

Shyness, grieving soon to be classified as mental illness

But maybe they – the psychiatrists – are not insane. Maybe, in light of other information, their motive is purely economic: to set up a scenario in which they can dispense more drugs, which are dangerous. This view is argued in this article about a documentary that reveals this agenda. “From the time we are born, society begins programming us to fit in. If a person rebels against that programming, there is a good chance that they will be labeled mentally ill. But, not to worry. There is cure for social misfits–just give them a pill and disregard the fact that many of society's so-called social misfits have been geniuses that improved the world we live in.  From personal experience, I know children, who as young as six years old, were placed on anti-psychotropic drugs. Did they really need these drugs? Or was this the easy answer to bad parenting? Society, generally, has been convinced that psychiatrists know best.  And yet, human rights groups are beginning to question the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), used by most psychiatrists. The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is one such group. In an award winning documentary, “The Marketing of Madness–Are We All Insane?” CCHR explores the conflict, particularly as it relates to the apparent influence of Big Pharma over the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).  Indeed at least 18 DSM committee members who decide on the manual's content have fully documented financial ties to pharmaceutical companies.  The proposed disorders in DSM-V have already raised eyebrows. Says psychiatrist and author Niall McLaren, “The entire DSM project is an exercise in the politics of committees funded by the drug industry… Without an understanding of the physical, scientific causes of disease, the rest is just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.”

“For many critics, Exhibit A is childhood ADD. As the disorder describing fidgety, easily distracted kids morphed from “hyperkinetic reaction of childhood” to the current “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,” the number of children given the diagnosis exploded, fueling, by one account, a 700 percent increase in the use of Ritalin and other stimulants in the 1990s. Diagnosis requires checking six of nine boxes from a list of symptoms that include “often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly” and “often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat.” Sound familiar, parents? Two other newly proposed disorders singled out as problematic in the petition are “mild neurocognitive disorder” in the elderly and “disruptive mood dysregulation disorder” in children and adolescents. Both lack a solid basis in research and may fuel the use of powerful antipsychotic medications, which cause weight gain, diabetes and a host of other metabolic problems, the petition says. “We are gravely concerned that if this is published as is in 2013, it will create false epidemics where hundreds of thousands of children and the elderly who really are normal will be diagnosed with a mental disorder and given powerful psychiatric medications that have dangerous side effects,” Elkins says. “That is not tolerable.”

Are Psychiatrists Inventing Mental Illnesses to Feed Americans More Pills?

With  big money to be made, it will be published with false, vile, garbage diagnostic descriptions, for sure. You can bet your mortgage, stock portfolio and sanity on it. And how long will it take for enterprising government prosecutors, taking a leaf from Soviet-era Russia, to use the new DSM as a basis for incarcerating and committing people to mental hospitals, that is, people who disagree with the government's views on any matter, due to mental illness described in DSM (“adult oppositional defiant disorder”)?  Only a matter of time. The new DSM will expand the scope of evil in the US in various ways.

Phi Beta Iota:  This is another example of the failure of government “intelligence” compounded by the failure of government integrity, to push back against criminally insane behavior in the private sector.  Governments exist to provide for the common good those things that the governed desire be done Of, By, and For the people.  At root, 21st century governance — and the new craft of intelligence — are about assuring that the collective intelligence of the public is not swamped by the collective corruption of predatory organizations and lies.  Lies are like sand in the gears of a very complex machine.  Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation are part of the problem with their altered vaccines and hidden agendas.  Whom can we trust?  Transparency will dictate that.
