Three Latin American leftist leaders offer asylum to Snowden

(Reuters) – Bolivia offered asylum on Saturday to former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, joining leftist allies Venezuela and Nicaragua in defiance of Washington, which is demanding his arrest for divulging details of secret U.S. spy programs.

“I want to tell … the Europeans and Americans that last night I was thinking that as a fair protest, I want to say that now in fact we are going to give asylum to that American who is being persecuted by his fellow Americans,” Morales said during a visit to the town of Chipaya.

“Who is the guilty one? A young man … who denounces war plans, or the U.S. government which launches bombs and arms the terrorist Syrian opposition against the people and legitimate President Bashar al-Assad?” Maduro asked, to applause and cheers from ranks of military officers at a parade.

“Who is the terrorist? Who is the global delinquent?”

Phi Beta Iota:  The Reuters editor, by inserting the word “leftist” into the headline, has betrayed his or her intellectual limitations.  This is not about left or right.  We anticipate that Brazil and at least one other country will join what could be a ground swell of anti-US official sentiment.  The declaring of a number of Ambassadors as personna non grata would be amply justified.  What was done to the President of Bolivia at the bidding of the US Government by several European countries that should have known better was a disgrace to all leaders, all diplomats, and all citizens.  We do not consider Snowden a hero, unlike the three legitimate whistle-blowers who are here in the USA and have suffered bravely for their righteous protests.  We believe Snowden was recruited by the Chinese with the explicit intent of gutting Obama during his meeting with Xi, and their covert operation succeeded brilliantly.  It remains to be seen whether they will actually pay Snowden, now that they have foregone the opportunity to dangle him in Hong Kong for a ham-fisted CIA rendition that could be filmed as CIA was filmed in Cuba, and then broadcast publicly.  He should be extradited for being a traitor, not for being a whistle-blower, but the idiocy in the White House is not to be denied — they have blown it by refusing to disclose the Chinese success story and throw their weight around.  The Organization of American States (OAS) is dead.  The Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) is comatose.  The best of the US diplomats responsible for Americas matters have resigned.  Obama never read Open Veins of Latin America, as he should have (Robert Steele's summary review is here) after being handed the book by Hugo Chavez.  The US Government at the political level (not to be confused with the American public, the once-Constitutional Republic, or America the Beautiful) remains out of control — arrogant and ignorant.  The seven sins are in full force, compounded by killer drones with a 98% collateral damage rate, 53% of American adults NOT having full-time work, and a host of other preconditions of revolution that would make any third-rate dictator proud.

The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) have a legitimacy that the OAS lacks precisely because they do not include the USA and its Canadian mini-me.  In Europe NATO is going to confront this issue of the US “fatal cancer.”  Both NATO and the EU need to learn to say “no” to the the Americans, to integrate with one another so as to be able to do full spectrum strategy and policy based on intelligence with integrity, and to reach out to the BRICS, migrating from being a logistics support agency for American war crimes, becoming instead a European centre for common sense, honest thinking, and fact-based policy.

UPDATE 8 July 2013:  Latin America and others have figured out that the refusal of the USA to extradite bankers — called financial terrorists by some — is an angle to be played in mocking the US demand for the extradition of Snowden.
