ROBERT STEELE: The incapacity of the “modern” IT industry continues to astonish me. These people have learned nothing in a quarter century — they are on a linear path that will never reach exasale near real time geospatially grounded processing nor empower individual end-users with decision point at the point of sale. Their inability to appreciate the value-added of holistic analytics and true cost economics and open source everything engineering is a marvel to behold. The mind-sets of “modern” IT “leaders” strike me as precise mirrors of the mind-sets of the extractive industry mandarins too ready to sell out future generations for the sake of current selfish profits. The manner in which Gates and Zuckerberg are spending their billions on “charity” is particularly revealing. Rich in cash beyond anyone's imagination, while morally and intellectually impoverished in the larger context of humanity and all it could be — if they were focused as I dare to suggest, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) would be on track for accomplishment within the decade. Augmenting human intelligence is righteous and necessary — artificial intelligence in isolation is a scam.
