The International Journal of Intelligence and CounterIntelligence, in a special issue, will focus on the role and performance of double agents and moles within the military, political, operational, and sociological motivations and entanglements of this sector of intelligence collecstraightforward tion. Double agents and moles rarely remain unmodified, and their influence may not be as as their handlers expect.

Possible papers can focus on the following questions for consideration…..

·       How does culture effect the recruitment and handling of double agents and moles?

·       Has the handling of double agents and moles changed historically in relation to state sponsored intelligence and counterintelligence doctrines?

·       Using a case study approach, what lessons can be learned in establishing preventative counterintelligence doctrine?

·       What are the characteristics of tradecraft required for recruiting and handling double agents and moles, and what are their roles in intelligence collection, dissemination, deception, influence and disruption operations?

·       History has shown that information passing through the double agent or mole has been influenced by the interpretive biases of their handlers as well as other intelligence officials. How does such biases influence intelligence assessments, as well as subsequent policy decisions?

·       How did the presence of a mole or a double agent influence, modify or distort the one sides’ image/perceptions of the another side?

·       Are double agents and moles consciously used as channels of information between belligerents?

·       What situations did the employment of double agents and moles backfire and why?

Are there distinct lines of demarcation, differentiating between double agents and other actors with mixed loyalties, such as “triple agents” and “intelligence entrepreneurs” who work for the highest bidder?

We welcome all article proposals covering any aspect of double agents and moles (e.g., historical, geographical, theory, etc…).

Please send a one-page abstract and a short bio before 1 October 2020
