STEM Is the Key to Stronger Education

Technology and engineering, both critical dimensions of our global economy and society, require mastery in science and advanced math.
The good news: STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) occupations are expected to grow 17 percent in 2008-2018, versus 9.8 percent for non-STEM jobs, and earn 26 percent higher wages.
The bad news: An estimated 3 million STEM-related jobs remain unfilled because of learning and skills gaps.
ROBERT STEELE: Since I wrote the original article on “Creating a Smart Nation” in 1995, I have been ignored by all but a few professors. The education “stove-pipe,” the intelligence (right now inept technical spying instead of what it is supposed to be, decision support that is neither secret nor expensive) “stove-pipe” and the research “stovepipe” are all extremely corrupt and myopic pork troughs for Congress– a standard 5% kick-back keeps business as usual going. Most recently I proposed the integration of education, intelligence, and search under one Secretary General for Education, Intelligence, and Research. See all the ideas at We the People Reform Coalition and also at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog. Until Presidents learn to listen to iconoclasts, they will be surrounded by sychophants incapable of learning and incapable of leading.
