Clean-slate networking for mobile devices
2007 Abstract: Haggle is a layerless networking architecture for mobile devices. It is motivated by the infrastructure dependence of applications such as email and web browing, even in situations where infrastructure is not necessary to accomplish the end user goal, e.g. when the destination is reachable by ad hoc neighborhood communication. In this paper we present details of Haggle's architecture, and of the prototype implementation which allows existing email and web applications to become infrastructure-independent, as we show with an experimental evaluation. Below the Fold: Freenet, TOOZL, and Syllable
Freenet: Share, Chat, Browse. Anonymously. On the Free Network
Freenet is free software which lets you anonymously share files, browse and publish “freesites” (web sites accessible only through Freenet) and chat on forums, without fear of censorship. Freenet is decentralised to make it less vulnerable to attack, and if used in “darknet” mode, where users only connect to their friends, is very difficult to detect.
TOOzL: The One Ounce Laptop
TOOzL is available courtesy of the Mindtel Project. It is a package of open-source software that enables one to carry critical communications and office productivity tools (and corresponding data) on a USB stick. Download the software from Mindtel.
Syllable is a volunteer project that creates a family of easy to use, free software operating systems. You can use them separately, or you can use them together to form network platforms. Read our full introduction and go to the Syllable Desktop and Syllable Server sites for more information, news and software downloads.
Syllable Desktop is an original, modern operating system design, in the tradition of the Amiga and BeOS, but built using many parts from the GNU project and Linux. It is designed and optimised for your desktop PC, making it exceptionally fast and responsive and easy to use.
Syllable Server is a small and efficient Linux operating system. It uses the Linux kernel and is compatible with Linux software, but is otherwise built to be as similar as possible to Syllable Desktop, using mostly the same parts. It is optimised for server computers, yet inherits a lot of efficiency and speed from the Syllable Desktop design.
