Marijuana Decriminalization in U.S. Capital Passes Council

By William Selway

Bloomberg News, March 04, 2014

The Washington city council voted to decriminalize marijuana consumption in private homes, adding the nation’s capital to a growing list of states that have loosened sanctions for using the drug.

The council today approved reducing the punishment for possession of as much as an ounce of marijuana to a fine, instead of potential jail time. The bill goes to Mayor Vincent Gray, a Democrat, who has said he will sign it, and the U.S. Congress, which can reject it.

At least 17 states have legalized or decriminalized recreational use or possession, putting them at odds with federal law. Washington state and Colorado have legalized the sale of the drug for recreational use, and advocates are pushing similar measures in other states.

ROBERT STEELE: Several years ago, being interviewed for the Hollywood movie, American Drug War: The Last White Hope, I identified marijuana as a seam issue. The legalization of marijuana is inevitable, and it represents the end of rule by secrecy and “because I said so,” and the re-emergence of common sense and public consensus. What is not clear yet is how long it will take to end the privatization of prison slavery in the USA, and obtain reparation for the (mostly black men) prison population that has been unjustly imprisoned because of corrupt and ignorant local, state, and national government. Any Member of Congress that votes against the good intentions of Washington DC should be held liable by their constituents and expelled from office in 2014 or in the case of Senators, when next they come due.
