What would it take to bring the social net under OUR control… here's a project
This is a first draft of a proposal to design and build a user friendly, egalitarian, and decentralized social platform that enables and inspires a mass of cooperative participants to come together as a powerful movement. . . . The hope is that social entrepreneurs will utilize this decentralized protocol to develop decentralized apps to disrupt any and all tech monopolies with decentralized P2P schemes, egalitarian business models, and “platform cooperativism”.
A decentralized system levels the playing field by bypassing tech monopolies, the gatekeepers, who take undue tolls on all our online activities. Because crucial data will be held and controlled by the user, and all software will be open source, there is less chance of new unaccountable monopolies forming.
Phi Beta Iota: This is impressive — more impressive than Hylo at first glance — and could potentially be a Facebook or Google killer, particularly if India adopts it as the content heart of the Smart Cities initiative. It lacks — as do all such ventures — a concept for ingesting, processing, plotting, and exploiting data — social networks don't “do” data or sense-making, and that is their primary dysfunctionality. This is the first instance we have seen of a distributed platform that could conceivably be adapted to be a foundation for creating the World Brain.
