I am ambivalent about whether Chuck Hagel has the managerial and bureaucratic skills to make the kind of Sec of Defense we need to clean out the Pentagon’s Augean Stables — but the outrageous neocon assault on him because he does not kowtow to the Likud party line is over the top, as Steven Walt explains below.

Can the United States Strike a Bargain with Iran?

by Patrick Seale,

Agence Global, 18 Dec 2012

Phi Beta Iota:  Little minds, timid minds, always go for dichotomies and juxtapositions — the either / or conundrum.   The fact is that anyone who presents Israel and Iran as an either / or lack intelligence, or integrity, or both.  Israel is out of control and a cancer on US foreign and security policy.  Iran is coming of decades of state-sponsored terror courtesy of the USA.  In both instances, the US policy circles have been immature, ideologica, and uninformed.  Ethical evidence-based decision-support introduces to any discussion a leavening of reality and alternaatives — it is NEVER either / or, it is ALWASY — for big minds with moral courage — some of this, some of that, and we balance the rest.  Such intelligence with integrity is not to be found in the present cast of characters pretending to be adults in Washington, D.C.
