‘Because in the 21st century, military strength will be measured not only by the weapons our troops carry, but by the languages they speak and the cultures they understand,” the president said.

Phi Beta Iota Editorial Comment:

Let there be no doubt of our hopes for President Barack Obama.  He has the potential to be the George Washington of the 21st Century, but first he needs to reform the electoral process, the secret intelligence world, the governance process, and national security. Above is the most intelligent thing he has said about the military to date.

Left unsaid is the lunacy of continuing 750 bases overseas, a military-industrial complex that has bought out Congress, and a White House that is incapable of creating coherent strategy for both Whole of Government operations and the creation of the only end-state acceptable to We the People: a prosperous world at peace.  We savor these occasions flashes of sanity.  Click on the photo for the original story.

This happens to be what we told the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1992 (and the Assistant Secretary of Defense then serving, Dwayne Andrews) but we could not prevail against the dogma then, still the dogma now, “protect the shooters.”  The Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) is going to be an abyssmal waste of time unless we can bebalance not just the instruments of national power, but the process by which decisions are made.
