[My past experience] left me with the conviction that the White narrative was a comforting lie. Now Edward Baptist has taken this mythology head on. Here is a taste.
Phi Beta Iota: The Civil War was not fought to free the slaves — it was fought to give the North the right to colonize the South — to carpetbag the South for twelve years and beyond. It was a war of, by, and for banks that financed both sides of the war to secure ownership of both the North and the South in all practical terms. Today there are growing numbers that recognize that all forms of wage employment are a form of slavery, privatizing profit for the few, eradicating rights of the many, and externalizing great cost to future generations. Others have written about great awakenings and great turnings. We do feel — most positively — that a major leap in human consciounsess and human community is looming within the next quarter century.
