Biography in Book:

James Duncan is VP of Technology at Marketingisland, in Montreal, Quebec. Prior to joining Marketingisland James worked for Fotango Ltd, a Canon subsidiary, first as its Chief Scientist and then as CIO. While at Fotango James spent time researching many emerging technologies, including 3D printing. When James finds the time he blogs at http://www.whoot.org/.

Updated Biography:

James is a grizzled veteran of many startups – some successful, some not.  Having seen the successful acquired, and IPO’d, James brings perspective of how companies change, from small to large, and what a company needs to do at each stage of its growth. Most recently, James was one of two founders at Reasonably Smart, a Platform-as-a-Service company based in Montréal. James became Joyent's VP of Product Development after their acquisition of Reasonably Smart.

Prior to Reasonably Smart, James spent seven years at Fotango, finishing his time there as the CIO. Fotango, acquired by Canon in 2001, developed one of the world’s first Platform-as-a-Service offerings.  This expertise allows James to bring a deep knowledge of platforms, frameworks, and operations to Joyent and their customers.

Leonard Fuld is a pioneer in the field of competitive intelligence. He has created many of the intelligence-gathering techniques currently used by corporations around the globe. Mr. Fuld's company, Fuld & Company, founded in 1979, specializes in providing business intelligence to corporations to improve their decision-making for strategy, operations and tactical applications.

Mr. Fuld is a widely published author. In addition to his latest book, The Secret Language of Competitive Intelligence (Crown Publishing, a division of Random House, Inc., 2006), and The New Competitor Intelligence (Wiley, 1995), Fuld has previously published Competitor Intelligence: How to Get It – How to Use It (Wiley, 1985) and Monitoring the Competition: Find Out What's Really Going On Over There (Wiley, 1988).

Who’s Who in Earth Intelligence: Medard Gabel

Medard Gabel

Medard Gabel is a noted author and speaker who co-founded World Game Institute with Buckminster Fuller. Medard also founded BigPictureSmallWorld, Inc..  In conjunction with Global Education Motivators, Medard created the Design Science lab which is a workshop for developing strategies to address the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.  As #2 to Buckminster Fuller for many years, he helped create the analog World Game.  More recently, as a founding member of the Earth Intelligence Network, a 501c3, he created the preliminary staffing and funding plan for creating the digital EarthGame(TM).

His influence was central to the chapter, “World Brain as EarthGame,” in COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace (EIN, 2008).

Dr. Ben Gilad, considered a leading developer of competitive intelligence (CI) theory and practice in the US, is a former Associate Professor of Strategy at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Management. Gilad’s first CI books, The Business Intelligence System (1988, AMACOM, co-authored) and Business Blindspots (1994, US: Probus/Irwin; 1998, UK: Infonortics), paved the way for the CI evolution in US corporations, many of which emulated the basic principles of Gilad’s CI process model. He is the co-editor of the definitive analysis book, The Art and Science of Business Intelligence Analysis (1996, JAI Press), reprinted and updated with Jan Herring in 2008.

In 2004 Gilad published his breakthrough book, Early Warning (AMACOM, 2004), which defines for the first time a new role and scope for CI practitioners based on his innovative work with two strategic early warning systems in two leading global corporations. For this new risk management perspective of CI, CI Magazine labeled him “our CI guru”. The Society of Competitive Professionals honored him with its highest Meritorious award in 1996.
