Your Government Wants to Militarize Social Media to Influence Your Beliefs
A global conference of senior military and intelligence officials taking place in London this week reveals how governments increasingly view social media as “a new front in warfare” and a tool for the Armed Forces.
The overriding theme of the event is the need to exploit social media as a source of intelligence on civilian populations and enemies; as well as a propaganda medium to influence public opinion.
Phi Beta Iota: Social media exploitation is what morons do when they are given too much money and not held accountable for producing useful intelligence (decision-support). It is a variation of the mass surveillance waste epitomized by NSA, which processes less than 1% of what it collects and has never yielded truly useful intelligence warranting its $15B a year budget. Thomas Jefferson had it right: “A Nation's best defense is an educated citizenry.”It is also a neo-fascist neo-communist neo-socialist means of trying to tell people what to think rather than teaching them to think critically.
With the caveat that the Department of Education as presented constituted is absolutely worthless toward that end, we propose that all social media “investments” by the US Government be terminated, and instead a new “Grand Strategy” devised for creating a Smart Nation in which education, intelligence (decision-support), and research are integrated and focused on advancing peace and prosperity for America first, and then the rest of the world (to keep those pesky illegal immigrants happy at home).
