Pentagon gets to work planning for severe cuts

Wants to be ready if sequestration occurs

Defense officials have begun “serious planning” for automatic spending cuts that could force the Pentagon to lay off hundreds of thousands of civilian workers as it reduces its budget by $500 billion over the next 10 years.

“We are doing some serious planning for sequestration,” Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters Tuesday. “We need to be ready, and we’re working through those numbers right now.”

Known as sequestration, the across-the-board, automatic reductions are set to begin March 1, unless Congress reaches a deal on taxes and spending. Under sequestration, about $1 trillion is to be trimmed from the federal budget, with the Pentagon accounting for about half of that amount.

As many as 800,000 civilian employees in the Pentagon eventually could be laid off, defense officials say.

ROBERT STEELE:  BALONEY. 41% of all DoD weapons acquisition is documented waste. Cutting people is how the Pentagon tries to lie to Congress and the public. I have published solid numbers on what it would take to cut the DoD budget by 30% over the next 2-4 years, WITHOUT hurting people. The dirty truth about the Pentagon is that it has more admirals and generals than it has fighting ships or armed divisions, it is grossly mis-managed, and the corruption associated with big systems we do not need and cannot afford is supported by contractors that hire useless admirals and generals in order to veto through undue influence any reasonable cuts against systems — the F-22, for example, kills its pilots with toxins from the stealth technology, but the Pentagon would rather kill a few pilots and lie to Congress and the public, than cut that program. The lack of integrity in the Pentagon, starting with Panetta and going down to every one star officer that goes along with a deeply corrupt system that is NOT good at national security, is shameful. Our troops and civilians deserve better–DoD is not trained, equipped, or designed in the public interest, only for special interests.

Hagel’s problem is not going to be in confirmation, it is going to be in finding honest people to serve him, starting with Chuck Spinney, Winslow Wheeler, and myself. The barriers to his “discovering” us are huge. The barriers to his even listening to us, much less hiring us, are cataclysmic.
