A great deal of American politics today, as I have repeatedly noted, arises from the existential crisis in which, for the first time since Jamestown and the Mayflower, being born White will not automatically confer privilege. For many, particularly in the South, this causes enormous stress. Having the largest economy in the world be an economy of non-Whites will just add to this.
