I’m looking for examples of the most cutting edge uses of technology in smart cities. What’s your thinking on the future of smart cities? If you were doing research on the future of cities, what would you focus on?
“Smart City” today is a term that has lost its meaning. The graphic below shows the state of the art today, and suggests a growth path that moves far beyond the current practice of seeking to put “smart” information technology on top of “dumb” industrial-era artifacts.
To be truly smart, a city must combine a long-term process for eradicating the 50% waste that is inherent in all its domains from agriculture to energy to health to housing to security to water; and it must begin the equally long-term process of becoming citizen-centric instead of corporate-contract centric — this must include a re-design of fundamentals such as citizen-centric housing, citizen-centric transport, and citizen-centric employment options.
While the city is central the industrial era and metropolises are growing by orders of magnitude, the need to make cities adaptive and resilient is matched by the need to bring low-cost scalable interoperable Open Source Everything Engineering (OSEE) to the five billion poor, most of whom live in rural areas.
