Petraeus tells Congress that Benghazi attack was terrorism
By Karen DeYoung and Ed O’Keefe,
Washington Post, Friday, November 16
Former CIA director David H. Petraeus told Congress on Friday that the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, was clearly an act of terrorism, but he did not resolve the question of when the agency reached that conclusion, according to lawmakers who attended the closed-door sessions.
. . . . . . .
According to accounts provided by intelligence officials, the CIA concluded early on that Benghazi was a terrorist attack by definition, because any assault on a U.S. government installation with heavy weapons and substantial firepower could not be classified otherwise. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.
Phi Beta Iota: Congress is being mis-led. A proper hearing would demand all-source multi-agency inputs as well as solicit multinational contributions. We think it was a planned attack to shut down a CIA base with a swimming pool that was pissing off the Syrian government; the Ambassador was collateral damage from Khost Kathy idiocy–a “safe room” that was not safe, and a failure across the board (State on the Ambassador, CIA on the base, DoD on the contingency need and then the failure to respond for seven hours). The 19 October car bombing that killed the Labanese general who was the CIA front for the smuggling to the rebels (an act of war, by the way) must be examined in this light. NSA either does not have a clue, or is weeks behind on tapes for lack of linguists and leadership. DIA's initial conclusion was that bathtubs are five times more likely to have assaulted a CIA base than terrorists, but the Secretary of Defense did not find that funny, so they're being real quiet now. As always, there is no Human Intelligence (HUMINT) to be had, CIA being limited to cocktail parties and foreign liaison hand-outs.
