GLORIOUS, Lifts Heart and Mind, February 5, 2008

Kevin Kline

I normally do only non-fiction books, but I do use DVDs to unwind or tune out, to stave off insanity while allowing my imagination to frun free.

This is the ONLY movie in my collections that I play weekly on background, often stopping my work to foocus directrly.

The femate star, Judd, is incredibly talented, and as a result of this movie I have gone back to look at her other credits, some of which I list below. She is, in my view, the top female actress of our era.

She is a gold standard, the female equivalent of Anthony Hopkisns.

Wow, wow, holy cow, top-notch stuff,!!!!

DVD TwistedOld Spy Loves This Movie, February 4, 2008

Ashley Judd

I caught the first half of this movie on cable, and rented the DVD to see how it ended. I was enchanted, not just by the three actors (Judd whose latest is De-Lovely; Garcia from the Godfather etc; and Juckson from Pulp Fiction, The Negotiator et al), but by the over-all concept and execution.

Ignore the detractors–this is a superb story ably acted and I loved it. We in the clandestine service are quite proud of having the very highest rate of alcoholism, adultery, divorce, and suicide (I have 18 professional suicides in my professional history). I don't carry a badge, I do carry a Walther PPK Limited Edition (with a permit).

All three of these actors are gifted, but seeing Judd in this film, in contrast to her performance and complete make-over in De-Lovely, persuades me that she is one of the greatest female actors of our time and will be offering us many more superb acts with world class male actors for years to come.

This is a lovely first-rate film, and if you have lived with death and dishonor and fear including panic from time to time, this is a homecoming of sorts. Those that do not like it do not understand reality. However, to end on a humble note, spying is 90% boredom, including hours spent in hotel rooms waiting for agents to show up, and the most important skill in spying is typing–four hours for every hour of agent meeting–more if you have to transcribe the required recording of a meeting with a terrorist.

Other spy and cop/firefighter movies I have really enjoyed:
Seven (New Line Platinum Series)
Blown Away
High Crimes
The Hannibal Lecter Collection (Manhunter / The Silence of the Lambs / Hannibal)
The Departed (Widescreen Edition)
Breach (Full Screen Edition)
The Lives of Others
Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Firestorm
Ladder 49 (Widescreen Edition)

and of course anything with Alec Guiness in it (George Smily) and anying with Jason Bourne as the protagonist.

Review DVD: The Assassination of Richard Nixon

Richard NixonDrew Me In and Fasciated Me, February 4, 2008

Sean Penn

I was offered a free rental today, and casting around for something I had never seen before, I grabbed this one thinking it would be about how Nixon was outed from office, not actually assassinated. I put it in on background as I struggled with creating the index to a 550 page new book, and within 15 minutes I stopped and the movie had my undivided attention.

Sean Penn is perfect, deep, emotional, and inspires commitment to the movie and to his plight as a failure who is honest. As I am a student of how “honest” governments are in fact a form of legalized organized crime, I may have appreciated this movie more than most, but I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. What price integrity?

Other DVDs that have captured my imagination (we are limited to ten links) include:
Death of a President (Widescreen)
Fight Club (Widescreen Edition)
A Man Called Horse
The Last Samurai (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Glory
Lawrence of Arabia (Single Disc Edition)

HannibalManhunter is the Red Dragon, all three brilliant, February 1, 2008

Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Julianne Moore

Manhunter actually corresponds to the book featuring the Red Dragon.

This is one of the most interesting mind-thrillers I have ever enjoyed. The books, links below, are also recommended for those whose imaginations can create a richer tapestry than any DVD might offer.

Red Dragon

Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal

The new DVD, Hannibal Rising, is also superb and credible and I review it separately. Here is the link to the book and the DVD.

Book:

Hannibal Rising

DVD:

Hannibal Rising (Full Screen Edition)

Anthony Hopkins is the gold standard, but I must give full credit to the actors in Manhunter and Hannibal Rising, they are superb. While I missed Jody Foster, whose Silence of the Lambs performance was extraordinary, Julianne Moore is amazing, and fully her equal.

This set, both books and DVDs, is for the intellectual connosieur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb and worhty of public attention

October 18, 2007

Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, French Stewart, Faye Dunaway, Michael Massee, Vincent Spano

It was a very long flight to Oakland (to attend Bioneers), and this movie got me through the last two hours. It is superb. It should be required viewing for every citizen, every official, every foundation leader, every elected person. It is well-crafted, credible, absorbing, and thought-provoking.

Highlights:
* How the selfishness of one “run-away” infected person can kill tens of thousands and defeat the pre-quarantine containment process.
* Failure to control *each* passenger by name in the delicate transition from infected aircraft to controlled environment is the one thing that can destroy a containment.
* Failure to be candid with citizens and put public ran-away notice with photo of the run-away makes the situation much worse. Failure to tell the run-aways office workers and home family the exact threat they represent negates their value in bringing the run-away in before they infect hundreds more directly, thousands indirectly.
* The movie provides a fascination depiction of the scientific investigative process, while also depicting the political tensions among the Mayor, the Governor, and others, each seeking to balance archaic political calculations with unknown biological “runaway train” implications.
* The movie reminds us that a run-away worst impact is among first responders who missed the alerts and begin to die as fast as the people they are treating.
* The utility of ice rinks as emergency morgues for hundreds of bodies.

Overall this is a great movie with a fine plot including a worst case break-out of a convicted drug lord, and what happens when people turn off the radio or silence the witness before they can complete a sentence that begins “it's not so simple.”

Ed Harris Reigns, Diane Kruger Blooms

October 8, 2007

Ed Harris, Diane Kruger

This is such an extraordinary movie that I watched it twice and then ordered it from Amazon as a permanent part of my library.

Ed Harris moves into the very top ranks of male actors. He is nothing less than brilliant, an Oscar on steroids. Diane Kruger is utterly lovely and talented and surely a rising star of great importance and nuance.

The music is devastatingly perfect, there is so much life in this movie that I am inspired.

“The vibrations are God's breath. Music is God's message.”

Totally, utterly, wonderful in every respect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conclusively shows we can stop war

September 17, 2007

Lucas Belvaux

I respectfully encourage all serious reviewers to avoid the video review option. The video review sacrifices both rapid scanning of diverse views, and the ability to create added value from automated text search.

I am adding this DVD to my list of Serious DVDs, while also using the product link feature, which I like very much, to connect you immediately to other DVDs I recommend.

The DVD is made even more powerful by being based on a true story, how a German opera singer was reunited with his wife in order to sing for the Crown Prince, then took here to the trenches and started singing such that the Scots responded, then the French, and ultimately they agreed to a local cease fire for the night.

This movie has to be viewed to appreciate the depth and reality of its message.

Other movies that have impressed me with their messages of insane war and possible peace:
Why We Fight
The Fog of War – Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara
Peace One Day
Tibet – Cry of the Snow Lion
