Bye Bye American Billionaires!

If you know the famous song by Don McLean – American Pie from the 1970’s, sorry I had to ad-lib a little to make the point.

So Bye Bye American Billionaires!
I drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry.
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day America dies
This will be the day America dies.

Chevy is bankrupt and on federal life support. There is no water in many levies while others are flooding from weather changes. Our “good ole boys” (Farmers, Truckers, and Veterans) are telling us quite clearly America is going to die if we do not take action. Farms are failing, farmers are throwing away their produce, suicides are way above average. Truckers are squeezed by stupid regulations and government shutdown edicts, plus being are unprotected delivering to some areas. Our vets are ignored, abused, under funded, and suicides are way above average. Without food (farmers), delivery (truckers), and protection (veterans) we are finished as a nation. It is quite simple to see once it is pointed out to you, but most are too busy to look.

In a 2014 book, William Easterly highlighted and criticized The Tyranny of Experts (I reviewed it for Regulation here). His subtitle is revealing and relevant to the present moment: “Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor.” Experts can identify facts and make recommendations, certainly, but they’re not well-positioned to know the specific trade-offs and decisions people should make in light of what they know.
