When you picture immigrants to the U.S. do you picture Hispanics coming over the Rio Grande? Well if you are like Republican 1st District Texas Representative Louie Gohmert,  you probably do. All those wiry Mexicans with “calves like cantalopes” seem to haunt his dreams. But, as with most things Rep. Gohmert is wrong, as this report describes. You may be surprised.

Most recent Progressive Change Campaign Committee pool results get discussed by basic income advocates and critics

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee has released the results of its latest poll on voters’ response to a set of progressive proposals. It is fully available online, and amongst 52 proposals, the minimum guaranteed income (basic income, or BI) scored around middle table, with 59% of responses in favour and 27% in opposition with around 10% neutral. This result may seem surprising in a conservative-leaning society such as the United States, and is probably connected with other related issues, such as the desire to end tax loopholes for corporations (74% in favour) or the expansion of Social Security Benefits (70% in favour). How long can a democracy endure when its children don't even know what a democracy is. I agree with Justice Sandra Day O Connor when she says, the results are “truly frightening, and demonstrate that we must put the same emphasis on these subjects that we are putting on math and science.” The only additional comment I would make is that if we are emphasizing science and math, we are doing a dreadful job of it. American school children rank very low in the developed world on either science or math.
