Del Spurlock: Freeman Dyson

Good read.  Truly open source.

Legendary physicist Freeman Dyson talks about math, nuclear rockets, and astounding things about the universe

Today, Dyson frequently writes about science and technology's relationship to ethics and social issues. Business Insider sat down with him and talked about math, war, the human brain, the education system, and the Orion Project.

Bradley Metrock and the Alexa Conference: Alexa As a Game Changer for Search and Publishing

Bradley Metrock, Score Publishing, organized The Alexa Conference held in January 2017. More than 60 attendees shared technical and business insights about Amazon’s voice-search enabled device. The conference recognized the opportunity Amazon’s innovative product represents. Keyword search traditionally has been dependent on a keyboard. Alexa changes the nature of information access. An Alexa owner can talk to a device which is about the size of a can of vegetables. Alexa is poised to nudge the world of information access and applications in new directions.

Robert Parry: Daniel Lazare on How Putin Won Big From a Combination of US Mistakes

America’s Putin Derangement Syndrome

The mainstream U.S. media blames Russian President Putin for pretty much everything – from the Mideast mess to Europe’s disorder to the U.S. elections – but the reality is quite different, notes Daniel Lazare.

Russia is the dominant power in the Middle East at the moment – apart from Israel, that is – while the U.S. is in disarray as a dangerous rightwing buffoon ensconces himself in the White House. The Democrats should take a long hard look in the mirror if they want to know who the real loser is. But they won’t. They prefer to blame Putin and Russia.

Below are three offerings, from Chuck Spinney, Mike Lofgren, and Jon Rappoport. Each deals with competing forms of fake news — the Trump version versus the Empire version. Both are wrong but between the two, the Empire version is more wrong. I've done all I can to help Donald Trump — in my view Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer are deliberately sabotaging his early days, and both should be dismissed immediately.

An International Team of Experts Just Released A “Manifesto” on How to Fix Science

  • Experts have published a “manifesto” on how to improve science research in four areas: methods, reporting and dissemination, reproducibility, and evaluation and incentives.
  • With research showing that many published scientific papers fail to move science forward, this manifesto provides a much-needed blueprint for progress in science research.

The authors note in the manifesto that biomedical research is particularly flawed. They cite a “meta-research” analysis that determined that 85 percent of research efforts in that field are wasted.

Graphic below the fold.

The Disconnect: Big Data and Business Strategy

Imagine that: Big Data may not have a direct impact on business strategy.

I read “Why Big Data and Algorithms Won’t Improve Business Strategy.” I learned that Big Data learns by playing algorithmic chess. The “moves” can be converted to patterns. The problem is that no one knows what the game is.

Et Tu, Brutus? Oracle Database on the Way Out

i read “NoSQL to Undo Oracle’s Database Reign.” The author is a person who once worked at Oracle. Like Brutus, the author knows Julius Caesar. Sorry, I meant the jet loving, top dog at Oracle.

The tussle between Oracle and MarkLogic seems likely to continue in 2017. The write up explains that Oracle has become a lot like IBM. I learned:  read full post.
