Here is some good news. Researchers at Stanford have worked out what it really would take to convert from carbon to noncarbon energy. It can be done, and it is clear it is now no longer a matter of technology but of political will, and America's willingness to choose wellness over profit for the few. It will be cheaper, more efficient, productive of tens of thousands of jobs while, at the same time tens of thousands of lives in the U.S. alone would be saved. And it could happen by 2050.

Dutch Harvest Electricity From Living Plants To Power Streetlights, Wi-Fi & Cell Phones

Plant-e, a company based out of the Netherlands, has found a way to harness electricity from living plants, using them to power Wi-Fi hotspots, cell phone chargers, and even streetlights. The company debuted their project, called “Starry Sky,” in November of 2014 near Amsterdam, where they lit up more than 300 LED streetlights at two different sites. Their plant power technology is also being used to power the company’s headquarters in Wageningen.

401(k)s, a scheme devised by financial interests to milk the middle class and promoted by the Republic Party, like all trickle down Randian economic schemes, have proven to be a disaster. Here is the real story; it isn't pretty, and it is hardly acknowledged by American corporate media. But its impact is going to be tragically painful. I can find no example in the world where austerity conservative economic policies have produced increased wellness. But there are dozens of examples of their failure. Yet this is hardly mentioned in the campaigns — except by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

New study reminds us that Americans are woefully unprepared for retirement

crs logoPDF (15 Pages): An Overview of the Employment-Population Ratio

EXTRACT:

Recent estimates show that employment as a percentage of the civilian population has not returned to pre-recessionary levels. In November 2007, the employment-population ratio was 62.9%, indicating that 62.9% of the adult population had a job in that month. This rate fell steadily during the recession and several months beyond, before stabilizing around 58.5% in October 2009. Between October 2009 and March 2014, the ratio fluctuated within 0.3 percentage points of 58.5%. Since then, the employment-population ratio has climbed slowly to 59.3%, its value in April 2015.

Thermal solar with storage capacity combined with solar photovoltaics is set to challenge the fossil fuels base load electricity production…

Mega hybrid solar projects ready to take on baseload fossil fuels

2015 is shaping up to be a big year for the development of huge, hybrid solar power plants – the mega solar complexes that combine solar PV with solar towers and storage, and which are tipped to compete, soon, with baseload fossil fuels on both price and energy supply.
