Data-Driven, Networked Urbanism by Rob Kitchin offers a a useful overview of the various critiques of smart cities.

Abstract:

For as long as data have been generated about cities various kinds of data-informed urbanism have been occurring. In this paper, I argue that a new era is presently unfolding wherein data-informed urbanism is increasingly being complemented and replaced by data-driven, networked urbanism. . . . HOWEVER, whilst data-driven, networked urbanism provides a set of solutions for urban problems, it does so within limitations and in the service of particular interests.

Defend the Right to Share Your Work

Academic publisher Elsevier recently changed their rules on how authors may share their work. Authors were previously allowed to share their manuscripts through repositories immediately upon publication; now they may have to wait up to 4 years before doing so. The Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR), a group dedicated to open access to publicly-funded work, has put together a statement where individuals and institutions can collectively ask Elsevier to reconsider this action. Please add your name and help raise awareness of the struggle to keep knowledge freely available to all. Learn more.

Datameer: Action, Not Talk, about Data Governance

A happy quack to Datameer. The company is providing tools to deal with issues related to data quality, compliance, and security. If you Hadoop, Datameer is taking action, not just talking with regard to Hadoop crunching. With “end users” fooling around with analytics, outputs can be exciting. Some Statistics 101 students would be reluctant to turn these “reports” is at the end of the term. For MBAs, point and click analyses are quick and easy. Outputs? Hey, isn’t anything generated by a computer correct? Navigate to “Datameer Adds Governance Tools for Hadoop Analytics.”

Searching Bureaucracy

The rise of automatic document conversion could render vast amounts of data collected by government agencies useful. In their article, “Solving the Search Problem for Large-Scale Repositories,” GCN explains why this technology is a game-changer, and offers tips for a smooth conversion. Writer Mike Gross tells us:

In one particular case the cost of the automated process was less than one-tenth of the traditional process. Making content searchable, allowing for content to be reformatted and reorganized as needed, gives agencies tremendous opportunities to automate and improve processes, while at the same time improving workflow and providing previously unavailable metrics.

This Earth Day, Let's Start Using Analytics To Conserve Energy

The success of new energy projects relies on one crucial skill: the ability to derive insights from massive amounts of rapidly changing data. That’s why utilities and energy companies are adopting analytics to meet the rising demand for renewable energy from more sophisticated customers.
