The winds of change are blowing harder. The crisis since 2007 has renewed criticism of capitalism, but pressure for change has built far longer than that. So it is time to draw some lessons from the major social changes of the past and apply them now. One of the most important lessons concerns class. How activists see and act on today’s class system can make social movements more effective now than in the past – as a brief historical review can show.  . . .  What is possible now is a new class perspective that defines revolution in 2015 as clearly and explicitly targeted to end exploitation in any form.

All in all, the Islamic State has prompted a response that combines all the ingredients necessary to make it stronger: Western over-the-horizon military intervention; a regional arms race as a variety of countries rush to provide money and weapons to improvised proxies (whose factional and sometimes sectarian agendas further degrade decaying state institutions and exacerbate social fault lines); and growing repression of civil liberties and empowerment of backward-looking (but formally secular) power structures. With enemies like these, the Islamic State hardly needs friends.

European Union and NATO leaders must act urgently to set up a security organisation in the Middle East, create an EU consensus on immigration, asylum and human trafficking, and open up jobs for women in intelligence operations, according to the 2,300-strong Jam community. The experts also urged the creation of an international ‘Cyberpol’ agency.

[This book] was not a big surprise to me since I have been aware of the nature of our bloody brutal empire for about 10 years when I was 42, but it did reveal to me some things that I was still unaware of. I devoured it. I finished it much quicker than most books I read. I particularly love pages 16 and 17 where he gives 6 main points the empire is interested in.1 The US does not mean well. 2. The US is not concerned with democracy. 3. Anti-american terrorists are motivated by decades of awful things done to their homelands by US foreign policy. 4. The US supports terrorism against “OFFICIAL” enemies. 5. Iraq was no threat to the US. 6. There was never any such animal as the International Communist conspiracy. Read it for yourself and judge for yourself!
