On the Problem of (Cyber) Attribution

Is the recent report from the three-letter agencies on the alleged Russian hack of the Democratic National Committee evidence-based attribution or attributibabble?

Attitudes and judgments have these biases baked into them. Failing to appreciate this simple fact allows all sundry forms of popular nonsense to remain unchallenged. Such is the case with cyberattribution.

Faith-based attribution is a term used by security specialist Jeff rey Carr to denote nonscientific analysis that leads to untestable attribution to a security incident.

Denunciations of the report by the recently designated American ambassador at the UN, Nikki Haley, and by the firebrand Israeli diplomat, Danny Danon among others, is part of a trend in recent years in which supporters of Israel move to close down critical discussion rather than to respond substantively. Such tactics are a reflection of how weak Israel’s positions have become on such contested issues as settlements, excessive force, Jerusalem residency, discriminatory laws and regulations, and diversion of water.

Girls, Human Trafficking, And Modern Slavery In America

Our guest blogger is Malika Saada Saar, the executive director of Rights4Girls, a U.S. based human rights organization for young women and girls.

Forty percent of all human trafficking cases opened for investigation between January 2008 and June 2010 were for the sexual trafficking of a child. And while the term trafficking may conjure images of desperate illegal immigrants being forced into prostitution by human smugglers, 83 percent of victims in confirmed sex trafficking cases in this country were American citizens.

The majority of these children being sold for sex are girls between the ages of 12 and 14.
