Venessa Miemis: Transitioning from Rebel to Warrior

Culture, Ethics, Officers Call
Venessa Miemis

I’m in the process of reading The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, the Teacher, Healer and Visionary, by Angeles Arrien, PhD.  It explores paths to wholeness and empowerment from the perspectives of indigenous societies and shamanic traditions.

In her research, Arrien discovered a pattern of human archetypes that are consistent across cultures, seemingly universally embedded in the mythic structure of societies. When we learn to live these archetypes within ourselves, we can tap into their wisdom and begin to heal ourselves and our fragmented world.

The principles of the Four-Fold Way, based on the four archetypes, are:

1. Show up, or choose to be present. Being present allows us to access the human resources of power, presence, and communication. This is the way of the Warrior.

2. Pay attention to what has heart and meaning. Paying attention opens us to the human resources of love, gratitude, acknowledgment, and validation. This is the way of the Healer.

3. Tell the truth without blame or judgment. Nonjudmental truthfulness maintains our authenticity, and develops our inner vision and intuition. This is the way of the Visionary.

4. Be open to outcome, not attached to outcome. Openness and nonattachment help us recover the human resources of wisdom and objectivity. This is the way of the Teacher.

The first archetype explored in the book is that of the Warrior. The theme is about accessing the quality of courage, and to claim full leadership. She says:

The principle that guides the Warrior is showing up and choosing to be present. The developed Warrior shows honor and respect for all things, employs judicious communication, sets limits and boundaries, is responsible and disciplined, demonstrates right use of power, and understands the three universal powers.

As I read through the descriptions of the expressions of the Warrior, I could clearly see the places where I’m struggling to claim those things within myself.

(08/08/12) DENVER – Coloradans soon will have a new health insurance option – and this one is “owned” by consumers.

Called the Colorado Health Insurance Cooperative, it's based on models pioneered in other industries, such as farmers' co-ops for crops or
electricity, or member-owned businesses such as credit unions.

NIGHTWATCH: Syrian Alawites in Fight to the Death (or Exile) – Phi Beta Iota: The Era of MINORITY Rule by Violence Is OVER

Civil Society, Corruption, Cultural Intelligence, Culture, Ethics, Government, P2P / Panarchy, Politics

Syria: On 6 August, just days after the government declared Damascus nearly rid of rebel fighters, a bomb detonated on the third floor of Syria's state television and radio building in Damascus, leaving several people injured, according to Syrian state television.

Comment: The Syria opposition's tactics resemble those of the Afghan mujahedin who fought the Soviet forces. As long as they remained diffuse and confederated, they never presented a center of mass or central structure that the Soviets could target. They could execute bombings and ambushes at will, but never win the conflict until massive US, Saudi, and Pakistani assistance to the “muj” made the fight too expensive for Moscow to sustain.

A major difference is the Damascus government has no safe haven to which to retreat. Syria's information minister denounced Saudi Arabia and Qatar for providing individual weapons and ammunition but said the weapons are not sufficient to bring down the government. Small arms and individual weapons fail.

Politics. Prime Minister Riad Hijab, a Sunni Arab, defected and fled to neighboring Jordan, a Jordanian official and a rebel spokesman said Monday. Supposedly several other ministers and some more one-star generals defected as well.

Comment: These defections signify that Syria's Sunni elite, which heretofore has cooperated with the Alawites, has now rejected President Asad's reform program. Hijab was named prime minister as part of the political reform program. This increasingly becomes a fight to the death for the Alawites, who are holding on and holding together.

Phi Beta Iota:  Politically-speaking, the Industrial Era has been characterized by artificial boundaries imposed at the point of many weapons, with minorities elevated to serve as proxy rulers for their colonial benefactors, who nurtured corruption and tolerated genocide as acceptable costs of control and resource capture.  That era is now over.  It will take 50 years – a half century – for the 5,000 secessionist movements world-wide (27 of them in the USA) to assume their inherent independence under natural law, but this is inevitable.  Repressing publics with force is no longer affordable.  Integrity and legitimacy – as well as demographics – will define the 21st Century.

NATO Admiral Says the Future of Global Security is Strategic Communication

The title of this post is my interpretation of what ADM James Stavridis, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and Commander of United States European Command (USEUCOM), says in a new TED Talk. To be fair, what he actually says is that strategic communication should be the means by which the partnerships of an open source security strategy will be knitted together.

I’ve been admirer of ADM Stavridis for a long time, especially his embrace of social media and public diplomacy (In the interest of full disclosure: In addition to my role as a scholar of strategic communication, narrative and social media at the CSC, I am also US Navy Reserve officer assigned to NATO ACT; my remarks here reflect my own opinions and not those of the US Navy nor NATO).  The admiral’s TED talk unites his own personal advocacy for transparency and connectedness in his leadership roles with NATO and US DOD (he has a substantial presence on Facebook and Twitter) with a broader vision of sustainable security efforts globally.

NIGHTWATCH: General Flynn’s First Big Decision – Warning is Back at DIA – With Three Specific Suggestions from Robert Steele

Advanced Cyber/IO, Ethics, Military
Mike Flynn

General Mike Flynn's First Big Decision

Introduction to Strategic Intelligence Warning. DIA has announced that reconstitution of Indications and Warning is a key component of its five year plan. Warning failures associated with the Arab Spring were cited as prompting this rediscovery of old truths.

Bravo to DIA for remembering that warning is the foundation of US intelligence. Being smart is less important than being safe, as a government activity.

The Mission

Strategic intelligence warning is the one of the two primary missions of US intelligence, according to the National Security Act of 1947. The first is to use intelligence to help keep the country prosperous and safe under all circumstances. Warning is the second mission. Discussion and debate about these missions may be found in the Congressional debates and legislative history of the National Security Act.

The intent of Congress in 1947, as documented in the legislative history of the National Security Act, was that Pearl Harbor attacks should never occur again. Their prevention was the reason Congress and a very reluctant President Truman approved the US intelligence organizations in the Department of Defense and in the then-new CIA.

Every intelligence analyst who has not read the National Security Act of 1947 and National Security Council Intelligence Directive -1 (NSCID-1) is deficient.

DIA, to its great credit, is trying to get back to the foundations of US intelligence: helping keep the Republic safe by providing intelligence warning.

Marcus Aurelius: Marines Go Back to the Colt .45 Made in the USA

BZ Marines!

[BRAVO ZULU, DON flag signal for well done]

Sticking to their guns: Marines place $22.5M order for the Colt .45 M1911

It’s been called the greatest handgun ever made, and it has barely changed sine 1911, when the legendary John Browning designed it especially for the U.S. Military.

And now, the Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

Phi Beta Iota:  There is fluff in the article.  There are a lot of good things to be said about the 9mm as well as the Walter PPK with .38 ACP as a clandestine or back-up weapon, both silencer capable.  This is a good decision, not least because it Buys American.  However, the  Marines are still lacking with respect to the shoulder-held standard M16, zero in the way of Naval Gunfire Support, and with respect to aviation platforms.  If we ever get a President that demands intelligence and integrity from his Cabinet officers and creates an intelligence community able to create intelligence with integrity, Whole of Government decision-making making will improve across the board, and this will in turn enable the cutting of the federal government in half, and the elimination of the 50% of most federal budgets, including Program 50, that is fraud, waste, and abuse.'

Peer-to-peer production and the coming of the commons | Red Pepper

Michel Bauwens examines how collaborative, commons-based production is emerging to challenge capitalism. Below, Hilary Wainwright responds

Capitalism in its present form is facing limits, especially resource limits, and in spite of the rapid growth of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) economies, is undergoing a process of decomposition. The question is whether the new proto-mode can generate the institutional capacity and the alliances able to break the political power of the old order.
