Here is the latest on plastics, and the potential for harmful substances leeching foods packaged in plastics. This is not a happy story. My counsel is to choose foods, particularly liquid foods, that are not in plastic containers.

SchwartzReport: US Milk Bad — and Why

If you have issues with milk you are going to find this story very important. We have here what I think is going to be an new datastream, a new thread tracing the failure of the Industrial Animal Husbandry model.

You're Drinking the Wrong Kind of Milk
JOSH HARKINSON – Mother Jones

When my in-laws moved from India to the United States some 35 years ago, they couldn't believe the low cost and abundance of our milk-until they developed digestive problems. They'll now tell you the same thing I've heard a lot of immigrants say: American milk will make you sick.

It takes HOW much water to make a glass of milk?!

It turns out that they could be onto something. An emerging body of research suggests that many of the 1 in 4 Americans who exhibit symptoms of lactose intolerance could instead be unable to digest A1, a protein most often found in milk from the high-producing Holstein cows favored by American and some European industrial dairies. The A1 protein is much less prevalent in milk from Jersey, Guernsey, and most Asian and African cow breeds, where, instead, the A2 protein predominates.

It is long past time to pull back the curtain on the truth about the unholy relationship between psychiatry and Big Pharma. Here's a start.

Psychiatry Now Admits It's Been Wrong in Big Ways – But Can It Change?
BRUCE E LEVINE – Truthout

When I interviewed investigative reporter Robert Whitaker in 2010 after the publication of his book Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America, he was not exactly a beloved figure within the psychiatry establishment. Whitaker had documented evidence that standard drug treatments were making many patients worse over the long term, and he detailed the lack of science behind these treatments.

Phi Beta Iota: Mental illness is often caused by cognitive dissonance and external insanities. What we have done to our veterans and our families can easily be categorized as an atrocity, a high crime against society. Completely aside from the inherent corruption attentant to charlatans practicing psychiatry and crooks practicing faux pharmaceuticals, is the larger matter of social design. Industrial era top-down Weberian practices and the commoditization of human beings makes people crazy. It's not their fault. They are in fact the canaries in the coal mine.

Students Invent Water Purification Disc That Could Revolutionize Clean Water Access – Video 3min

Students at the University of Virginia have developed a new way of purifying water that they say could bring improved water quality for millions in the developing world.  It’s called a Madi Drop. Field testing begins this month in South Africa.

What’s created is called a MadiDrop – a ceramic disc infused with silver.

When dropped in water, silver ions, which are atoms that have an electrical charge,, are released to purify the water.  And, testing here at the University of Virginia shows clean, safe water.

“It’s not just about making a really great technology that effectively removes or kills bacteria and pathogens.  It’s about making a low cost, simple to use one, tailored to people in developing countries who don’t have many resources,” said Beeta Ehdaie, a doctoral candidate at UVA.

Growing number of chemicals linked with brain disorders in children

214 human neurotoxicants now identified — many widely used and disseminated extensively in the global environment

Toxic chemicals may be triggering the recent increases in neurodevelopmental disabilities among children — such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dyslexia — according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The researchers say a new global prevention strategy to control the use of these substances is urgently needed.

The report was published online February 15, 2014 in Lancet Neurology.

“The greatest concern is the large numbers of children who are affected by toxic damage to brain development in the absence of a formal diagnosis. They suffer reduced attention span, delayed development, and poor school performance. Industrial chemicals are now emerging as likely causes,” said Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at HSPH.

The report follows up on a similar review conducted by the authors in 2006 that identified five industrial chemicals as “developmental neurotoxicants,” or chemicals that can cause brain deficits.
