NASA discovers 715 new planets

  • Four of 715 newly discovered planets may support Earth-like life
  • It's the biggest single discovery of planets in history
  • All were found in the first two years of the Kepler telescope's voyage
  • NASA expects next batch of data to reveal more habitable planet

(CNN) — Our galactic neighborhood just got a lot bigger. NASA on Wednesday announced the discovery of 715 new planets, by far the biggest batch of planets ever unveiled at once.

By way of comparison, about 1,000 planets total had been identified in our galaxy before Wednesday.

Four of those planets are in what NASA calls the “habitable zone,” meaning they have the makeup to potentially support life.

The planets, which orbit 305 different stars, were discovered by the Kepler space telescope and were verified using a new technique that scientists expect to make new planetary discoveries more frequent and more detailed.

2014: The Year of Encryption

“The solution to government surveillance is to encrypt everything.”

Eric Schmidt, Patron of NSA Back Door Into Google

Phi Beta Iota: Apart from the obvious, that only open source encryption can be scrutinized by millions of minds, this also kills Microsoft, whose software is always 1.3 times what the hardware can comfortably support. Companies that are software pigs now, without encryption, will be comatose when they try to add encyrption to their kludge.

China's rover leaves first tracks on moon in 40 years

The successful launch marks the next step in an ambitious space program that aims to send a Chinese astronaut to the moon.

BEIJING — China's first moon rover set off slowly Sunday to travel across the right eye of the Man in the Moon, leaving the first wheeled tracks on the moon's surface in nearly 40 years.

No quote emerged to rival “one giant leap for mankind,” but with one loud confirmation by mission control — “the probe landed safely” — China established its status Saturday night as the third nation ever to achieve a “soft-landing” on the moon.

Two weeks after its launch from southwest China, the Chang'e 3 lunar probe, named after a moon goddess, made a careful descent that was reported live on state television. Only the USA and former Soviet Union have previously made soft landings on the moon, whereby the spacecraft and equipment remain intact and operable.

Further celebrations followed Sunday morning as its major cargo, a solar-powered lunar rover named Jade Rabbit after the goddess' pet, rolled down a ramp and set off on a three-month mission to hunt for natural resources and conduct geological surveys.

Rabbi Michael Lerner: 40 BIllion Habitable Planets?

Spiritual Progressives need to take time away from dealing with the craziness of politics and economics on our planet, and even from the huge amount of suffering caused by those systems and the way the values of selfishness and materialism get internalized into the consciousness of so many of us, and just celebrate the amazing reality of this universe!!

The NY Times  story below reports that “Astronomers reported that there could be as many as 40 billion habitable Earth-size planets in the galaxy, based on a new analysis of data from NASA’s Kepler spacecraft” While there is no proof that intelligent life exists on any of those planets (and some doubt that it exists on our planet too, though my golden labradoodle doggie Chamoodie seems pretty intelligent to me) it is not implausible to believe that some of them may have life like ours, and that we humans may not be alone in this universe.

One reason to create a “Sabbath” for yourself once a week is to give yourself time to focus on the celebration of the universe. Many Jews do it for 25 hours from just before dark on Friday night till 3 stars appear on Saturday night, and mix our focus on the awe and wonder at the universe of which human beings are an intrinsic part with

a. remembering and celebrating our liberation from slavery and the corresponding obligation to spread the message that the world can be fundamentally healed and transformed because it is created and governed by a Force of liberation and love, transformation and generosity, and

b. following the Jewish tradition which commands us to seek pleasure on the Sabbath with spiritual inwardness, meditation, prayer, singing, community,  and joy in food and loving-sexuality, becuse Judaism is a pro-pleasure religion. As I tell my congregation on Friday nights when we go outside to look at the stars and we visualize ourselves in this larger universe in which the scientists tell us there may be as much as 200 billion galaxies, most of the Hebrew words in the prayers in the traditional Jewish evening service that many of our members, not knowing Hebrew, may not understand,  boil down to three words about the universe: WOW, FANTASTIC, AMAZING! Praying those three words with all one's heart is the way to get into Shabbat!

Open Mind: UFO’s Going Back to 1940’s

Extraterrestial Intelligence

open source open mindUFOs Going Back to the 1940s

Well, well. This comes from an e-mail I received from Steven Greer at SiriusDisclosure.com.

In case you are not familiar with Dr. Greer, he has been pushing for official disclosure of E.T. and UFO presence going back to the late 1940s. There is ample evidence that at least some UFOs are extra terrestrial spacecraft, and that they have been visiting Earth for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Unfortunately our government and, to a lesser extent, other governments of the world, put a blackout  on all UFO information in the late 1940s, and have maintained it until today. The good news is that lately, hundreds of people are coming forward and telling what they know.
Below are copies of actual letters dating back as far as 1947, showing clearly that those in the know were concerned about the UFO presence, and the cover up.
