Distillation of the Book, Tailored for Army Audience,

This monograph is a distillation of my book, “The New Craft of Intelligence,” but one tailored for the U.S. Army, which under the leadership of General Peter Schoomaker has gone full force into the future, creating 40+ brigades out of the 10+ divisions, creating stabilization & reconstruction forces, being the first service to designate Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) as a separate “INT” with its own concepts, doctrine, manning, and funding, and so on. US Army personnel can get a free copy from the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College, and it is also online there, visible to the public and printable as a PDF. Including in this publication are recommendations that have been considered (not necessarily adopted) by the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, who first articulated the need for universal coverage, in all languages, at the neighborhood level, 24/7, in January 2004.

OSS '04: To the JHU-APL, and especially to Capt Joseph Mazzafro, USN (Ret) and Dr. Michael Vlahos, for sustained excellence in the integration of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) into their complex all-source analytic efforts in support of the Department of Defense.  Aided by the Gibson Library, they have set a new standard.

JHU-APL has always been a special place for special people to work in a manner that allows for the crossing of boundaries.  In the world of public intelligence in the public interest, two have stood out–Capt Joe Mazzafro, USN (Ret), who speaks truth to power in a manner most compelling, and Michael Vlahos, more on him on his own page.

Over the years Capt Mazzafro has, in our view, demonstrated integrity in discerning and reporting the truth, that is sorely lacking in too many quarters.  He does this on force structure, on strategy, on personnel, not just on sources & methods.  Below is hie contribution to OSS '04.

Recently (2007) the United Nations asked the Nordic countries, which customarily operate in a multinational multifunctional fashion (both intelligence and operations) to create a multinational multifunctional information sharing and sense-making program of instruction for the UN.  Col Jan-Inge Svensson is the lead in Sweden, and his first two offerings of the course combined with the contributions to this conference will comprise the new book, the second in the series, INTELLIGENCE FOR PEACE: Multinational Multifunctional Information-Sharing and Sense-Making.
