PittMesh routers are owned by individuals

If you have wireless networking equipment in your home that is capable of communicating with your neighbor's equipment, why not just communicate directly with them? PittMesh is a new community-owned wireless network that runs OpenWrt, a widely supported, well documented, open source firmware for embedded systems like WiFi routers. PittMesh routers are owned by individuals and configured in a way that make them work together to build a larger, decentralized network. The project was started by a wireless networking non-profit called Meta Mesh and has been developed by a world-wide coalition of programmers for well over a decade.  Read more.

Tiny Villages: Horizontally Scaling Society

Cloud computing is about horizontally (as opposed to vertically) scaling systems. Instead of building one super-powerful server, you create many inexpensive servers that each contain a small part of the system. There are multiple advantages to “scaling out” rather than “scaling up”, such as incrementally improved capacity with little or no downtime and less expensive, more maintainable servers.

In FBI murder data, mass killings often go missing

When 26 teachers, students and administrators were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School, it made national news for weeks. But there was one place 2012's largest mass killing was never mentioned: the FBI database that tracks all U.S. homicides.

And that isn't the only major case missing. The 12 people who were killed in an Aurora, Colo., movie watching the premier of a Batman movie aren't listed either, raising questions about the accuracy and usefulness of the federal data.
