Guardian: Intelligence chair: NSA leaker Edward Snowden may have had Russian help

Last year, in an interview with the New York Times, Snowden said he did not take any of the documents he obtained to Russia, “because it wouldn’t serve the public interest”.  Snowden said there was “zero-percent chance” that Russia had received any documents and that he had handed all his NSA data to journalists from media outlets including the Guardian, before leaving Hong Kong. “What would be the unique value of personally carrying another copy of the materials onward?” he said.

A senior F.B.I. official said on Sunday that it was still the bureau’s conclusion that Mr. Snowden acted alone.

John Steiner: Working Families Party – 25 Years of Very Hard Work About to See Positive Effect?

Thanks to: Billy Wimsatt

I found myself really moved reading this long-form piece on Dan Cantor and the roots and growth of the Working Families Party. Although I love WFP, consider Dan a friend, and have heard him rant often and at length about the WFP's strategy, I didn't know half the stuff in this article. It's a good read.

http://prospect.org/article/dan-cantors-machine

The most important part to me is that it took 23 years of diligent, disciplined and incredibly boring and unsexy work to build the WFP to where it is now a powerhouse in a couple of states, and poised to make a real impact in a bunch of other states and nationally… (and make millions of people's lives and the planet a little better and a little less burnt up).

The thing about truly transformational long-term plans (whether the civil rights movement or LGBT equality or building a progressive electoral machine or stopping prisons or saving our climate) is that the first 5 or 10 or 20 or 30 years usually SUCK.  You feel like you're losing and you're getting nowhere and no one takes you seriously and you're always broke and no one cares. And then you win.

Search Application Perspectives For 2014

With 2014 well under way, search experts are trying to predict what will happen for enterprise search. Search Appliance World has an article that takes a look on enterprise search in the past and future called, “The New Search Appliance Landscape: Reflections And Predictions With MaxxCAT.” Basic search commands that come in out-of-the-box system are old school and do not provide the robust solution enterprise systems need.

Search appliances became enterprise users’ favorite toys and everyone had to have the Google Mini Search Appliance, but those days are gone. Other search developers, such as MaxxCat, stepped up to the plate.

4th media cropped“US Naval Might is WANING,” REALLY?

On January 3 Rear Admiral Viktor Bursuk, a deputy commander of the Russian navy who oversees weapons procurement, said Russia’s Navy is expected to receive 40 new warships and auxiliary vessels in 2014.

In addition to surface ships of various classes, the Navy will also commission the third Borey-class nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, the Vladimir Monomakh, and a Varshavyanka-class diesel electric submarine.

SchwartzReport: Banks Launder Billions for Cartels but No Accounts for Legal Marijuana Vendors

You have probably noticed in stories about Colorado that the newly legal Marijuana business is run on a cash only basis because banks will not provide banking services. And you may remember the piece I ran the other day about how the government secretly was in league with one of the major Mexican drug cartels. Th! at led me to wonder whether the banks also had a secret deal. And, once again, a little digging turned up evidence that this was the case.

This makes the hypocrisy of the entire War on Drugs even more blatant and its inherent racism even more evident. Nothing about the War on Drugs is what it appears, except the destruction of hundreds of thousands of families and the endless incarceration of Black and Brown kids.

Big Banks Launder Hundreds of Billions of Illegal Drug Cartel Money … But Refuse to Provide Services for Legal Marijuana

Phi Beta Iota: The banks are following federal guidelines designed to screw the street-level merchants while ignoring the high crimes of the major banks doing the billion dollar money-laundering.
