Cincinnati’s experiment with an economy that works for everyone

The 1worker1vote network has developed and is beginning to implement a “union co-op” model, which calls for a business structure that combines worker, and sometimes community, ownership with union representation. With the model, 1worker1vote hopes to demonstrate the viability of a democratic economy, both in terms of ownership and management, capable of eventually replacing the corporate-managed economy that generates astounding wealth for those at the top while leaving nearly a quarter of the country living in poverty and half the population stuck in a debt trap with zero net assets.

An idea whose time has come … and it will.

Why ‘unconditional basic income for all’ fails the ‘splutter test’ but would liberate the world

EXTRACT

Under the scheme we will still work, for people are productive and want more than a basic living. But we are less likely to remain in exploitative or soul-destroying jobs. Unpleasant jobs would tend to pay more, and glamorous jobs less. With the removal of the benefit trap, people are more inclined to experiment entrepreneurially, or invest more time in their hobbies. Some people would choose to work less, especially when raising children or when taking time off to study. Zero-hour workfare contracts could go and fuck themselves.

Obama stonewalls SEAL Team 6 helicopter crash probe, watchdog says

EXTRACT

They believe SEAL Team 6 had a target on its back and that persons inside the Afghan National Security Forces may have tipped off the Taliban that night in Tangi Valley. That is why, they say, a fighter just happened to be stationed in a turret within 150 yards of a landing zone that had never been used before.

In the Age of Trump, Will Democrats Sell Out More, Or Less?

The collapse of the GOP gives the Democrats an opportunity to abandon “lesser evilism” — but they probably won't

EXTRACT

The Democrats could take this godsend of a Trump situation and use it as an opportunity to finally have a healthy primary season debate about what they want to stand for in the future. But nah to that. They'll probably just hoover donor cash and use press surrogates to bash progressives the way they always have. Trump or no Trump, if politicians don't have to work for your vote, they won't.

Viva The Academic Publisher Boycott!

Elsevier is one of the largest and most well-known scientific journal database, but it is also the most notorious for its expensive subscription fee and universities are getting tired of it.  Univers reports that “Dutch Universities Start Their Elsevier Boycott.”  The Netherlands, led by state secretary Sander Dekker, want all scientific content to be free online.  In order to be published, the university or financier pays to be so.  All content by Dutch scientists will hopefully be open access by 2024.

In the meantime, the Association of Universities in the Netherlands has asked all Dutch scientists that work with Elsevier to resign from their positions.  As to be expected, some are willing and others are more reluctant.  The goal is to pressure Elsevier to change its practices.
