The Menace of Unreality: How the Kremlim Weaponizes Information, Culture and Money covers the Kremlin's methods and motives as they spread the influence modern Russia, rightly called a mafia state. The concept of “Operations Psychological”, as defined by Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, plays a prominent role in these efforts. The impatient will want to skip to the Recommendations section on page 40; the simple, clear prescriptions may motivate paging back to understand more of the thinking behind them. Arab Spring has come and gone, ISIS is what it is, and the true challenge for the west in the 21st century is this next evolution of a network threat, an area in which the Russians vastly outperform the U.S.

berto smallGrading Gerasimov: Evaluating Russian Nonlinear War Through Modern Chinese Doctrine

Victor R. Morris in Small Wars Journal, 17 September 2015

Unrestricted war is a war that surpasses all boundaries and restrictions. It takes nonmilitary forms and military forms and creates a war on many fronts. It is the war of the future.

-Colonel Qiao Liang and Colonel Wang Xiangsui, Unrestricted War, Beijing, 1998

“Gerasimov Doctrine” contains particular similarities to the Chinese doctrine outlined in Unrestricted Warfare published in 1999, and historical roots in previous Russian doctrine. Both strategies involve using proxies, or surrogates, to not only exploit vulnerabilities in low intensity conflict, but to also prepare for future operations, which may involve high intensity conflict. Other strategies involve applying both low and high tech asymmetrical means, and also engaging in several forms of war. For example, Unrestricted Warfare describes 13 forms of “total war” and methods to consciously mix “cocktails” on the battlefield, or to employ combinations of forms of warfare in order to find innovative and effective approaches.

Revolutionary 3D Printer Can Build 10 Houses In 24 Hours For Only $5,000 Each

To remedy the housing crisis, as well as the increasing demand for economical and sustainably-produced living spaces, many architects are experimenting with 3D printing.  One such designer is Ma Yihe, the owner of the private firm WinSun. According to BBC News, WinSun managed to produce 10 full-sized, detached single-story houses in just ONE day – a monumental achievement. Based in China, the company used four 10m x 6.6m printers to spray a mixture of cement and construction waste to build the walls, layer by layer. The energy-efficient buildings, as reported by Xinhua news agency, can be produced for as little as $5,000 due to the lack of manual labor and cheap (as well as recycled) materials.

berto smallEnd-to-end encryption is key for securing the Internet of Things

Securing the IoT begins with understanding why it requires a fundamentally different set of strategies and tools than those currently used in IT, telecom and other domains   . . .   SSL/TLS is not sufficient for small devices with the need to protect the data in use, in motion and at rest.

The next step in Open Science? Text and Data Mining!

The new H2020 European project “OpenMinTeD” will be the first to build an infrastructure that makes it much easier to mine, by making existing text mining tools discoverable, interoperable and usable. The infrastructure brings together text and data registries/databases and will develop a standard layer, that makes it possible to easily find text and data from all over the world, and mine it.  . . .   It brings together the different stakeholders, content providers and scientific communities, text mining and infrastructure builders, legal experts, data and computing centres, industrial players and SMEs.

One LaaS Thing: Building the Indian Internet in local languages

India today speaks 780 languages represented in 86 different scripts. 29 of them are spoken by at least a million people, 22 are recognized by the Constitution as official languages. One of them, of course, is English. From being the language of colonial oppression, it has now risen to the status of the language of aspiration. Whenever I bring up the topic of the need for the promotion of India languages, I’m waved away by most who say that the rise of English speakers is inevitable. And perhaps it is.

Science needs an overhaul. Research is not free, if it challenges mainstream theories. There is no money for it and no publication, so it just isn't done, except on the very fringes.

The Need for Venture Science

Over the last few years, a growing chorus of insider critics have been exposing serious flaws in the ways that scientific research is funded and published, leading some to go so far as to say,”Science is broken.”

The dysfunctions they describe include:
