One of America's central myths is that we lead the world technologically. Anyone who travels out of the country knows how bogus this is and how, in so many ways — roads, bridges, airports, healthcare, education, childcare, life-expectancy, happiness, high speed trains and, yes, internet — Americans live a second world quality of life. This is an excellent assessment of the internet situation and it explains why it has h! appened. Once again monopolistic corporate interests that control the government have blocked the well-being of the many in order to maintain the profit for the few.

The country that literally invented the internet is now behind Estonia in terms of download speeds
According to a recent study by Ookla Speedtest, the U.S. ranks a shocking 31st in the world in terms of average download speeds. The leaders in the world are Hong Kong at 72.49 Mbps and Singapore on 58.84 Mbps. And America? Averaging speeds of 20.77 Mbps, it falls behind countries like Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Uruguay.
Its upload speeds are even worse. Globally, the U.S. ranks 42nd with an average upload speed of 6.31 Mbps, behind Lesotho, Belarus, Slovenia, and other countries you only hear mentioned on Jeopardy.

In his most recent Good Morning Geek post called Internet-Speak, Max Swisher discusses “…a new problem for modern people: We must all be bilingual and use the appropriate language depending on context. Teens in school must know how to talk online in lolspeak and the next day write a paper in diverse, formal English.”
Max introduces us to “Arrow,” a mythical person from the city of Hindrawyt in Indochinalumbilan. Arrow is a well-studied teenager, who has learned classic English prior to coming to the U.S. Once here, Arrow is faced with a new language. Max calls it “lolspeak” and we also know it as internet-speak.
Max brings up a number of points that got me thinking.

In a leaked audio recording of a telephone call between Estonia’s Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and EU foreign affairs boss Catherine Ashton, Paet told his counterpart leaders of the Euromaidan movement that would ultimately overthrow the government of Viktor Yanukovych were likely behind sniper killing last month.
The revelation was recorded an uploaded to the web by officers of Security Service of Ukraine loyal to Yanukovych who hacked the phone conversation, RT reports today.
“There is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers, it was not Yanukovych, but it was somebody from the new coalition,” Paet said.
“I think we do want to investigate,” Ashton said.
