Bad management drives talent from CIA, internal reports suggest

Frustration with poor managers is costing the CIA some of its most talented staff, internal surveys and former officers say.

Los Angeles Times, July 29, 2013

WASHINGTON — For the Central Intelligence Agency, he was a catch: an American citizen who had grown up overseas, was fluent in Mandarin and had a master's degree in his field. He was working in Silicon Valley, but after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he wanted to serve his country.

The analyst, who declined to be named to shield his association with the CIA, was hired in 2005 into the agency's Directorate of Intelligence, where he was assigned to dig into Chinese politics. He said he was dismayed to discover that unimpressive managers wielded incredible power and suffered no consequences for mistakes. Departments were run like fiefdoms, he said, and “very nasty internecine battles” were a fixture.

By 2009, he had left the CIA. He now does a similar job for the U.S. military.

smartplanet logoAre healthcare costs in developed countries simply opportunistic? One Indian healthcare entrepreneur thinks so.

Devi Shetty, heart surgeon turned businessman, has a vision for India — cut-price, life-saving surgery for those who cannot afford it otherwise. Shetty has created 21 healthcare centers around India with a difference; by trimming down operational costs, the price of artery-clearing coronary bypass surgery has been sliced in half in the last two decades.

In the surgeon’s centers, cardiac surgery costs 95,000 rupees ($1,583).

SchwartzReport: Tar Sands Disaster in Canada Unfolding

03 Environmental Degradation

schwartz reportThe corporate media pays no attention, you almost never see a mention of what is happening, and the American government doesn't want you to know about it. But here is the reality of the Alberta Tar Sands. This is a vile project, ill-conceived, and with great power to destroy the environment.  Click through to see the pictures of what this project is doing to the environment.

Alberta Tar Sands Have Been Leaking for Nine Weeks with No Signs of Stopping
MORGANA MATUS – inhabitat

EXTRACT:

In Cold Lake, Alberta an environmental disaster is unfolding. The Primrose bitumen emulsion site has been seeping tar over 30 acres of swampy forest for the past nine weeks. Already, the viscous substance has contaminated a large swath of vegetation and killed dozens of animals. About 26,000 barrels of tar have been removed from the area. An anonymous government scientist told the Star that the leak was not going away, that no one understood the causes of the problem, and do not have any effective remediation measures in place. A spokesperson for the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), which oversees the extraction sites, is currently working with owner Canadian Natural Resources Ltd to begin to clean up the mess.

Owl: Is US Military Waging Cyber-War for Monsanto Against GMO Activists? Or Are All “Activists” Now Considered “Terrorists?”

US Military's Not So Secret War on anti-GMO Activists and Scientists Exposed?  Or a Simple Misunderstanding?

“A highly concerning new investigative report from the largest daily newspaper in Germany alleges that Monsanto, the US Military and the US government have colluded to track and disrupt both anti-GMO activists and independent scientists who study the adverse effects of genetically modified food. As revealed by Sustainable Pulse, on July 13th the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung detailed information on how the US Government “advances the interests of their corporations,” focusing on Monsanto as a prime example. The report titled, “The Sinister Monsanto Group: ‘Agent Orange’ to Genetically Modified Corn,” described a ‘new fangled cyber war’ being waged against both eco-activists and independent scientists by supporters and former employees of Monsanto, who are described as “operationally powerful assistants” and who have taken up sometimes high ranking posts in the US administration, regulatory authorities, and some of whom have connections deep within the military industrial establishment, including the CIA. “Monsanto contacts are known to the notorious former secret service agent Joseph Cofer Black, who helped formulate the law of the jungle in the fight against terrorists and other enemies. He is a specialist on dirty work, a total hardliner. He worked for the CIA for almost three decades, among other things as the head of anti-terroism. He later became vice president of the private security company Blackwater, which sent tens of thousands of soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan under US government orders.”

Pierre Cloutier: A View of Concern About the North American Union

Commercial Intelligence, Cultural Intelligence
Pierre Cloutier
Pierre Cloutier

A respected commentator in French (here is Google translation to English):

The new American superpower

A new ideological and geopolitical discourse is now to appear in the American economic and military circles political leaders. Faced with the rise of Chinese power, soon to be, inevitably, the largest economy in the world in terms of production, we begin to hear a new speech in Washington: The world's leading power for at least two decades to come, will not China, but the whole formed by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This set, they say, should be considered as a single country: economic integration, which began with the introduction of NAFTA, is now well advanced. The three countries have the same ideology, the same interest in defense and cooperate closely on all fronts, economic, cultural and military. Mexico has become a modern country where the rule of law is respected, as in the other two countries. Mexico and Canada Americanized high speed and the economic and cultural integration is considerable

This scenario is not unlikely. This set is indeed the first power in the world and will be long: a current total population of 470 million, which will be 540 million in 2030. A total GDP of 19,000 billion, which will be at least 25,000 billion by 2018. In both cases, much higher than China.

The United States, who are naturally a leader of the coalition, would delay and, as the Roman Empire, the time of its decline. All American strategy will therefore focus on the success of this economic integration, complemented by political integration, using for it the mass media. And integration may be easier to achieve than that tempt members of the European Union: The Americans are only three, with a dominant power may try to dictate.

This would have significant geopolitical consequences. Domination of North America to South America, and Europe, which does not measure, for example, the consequences of such a union on commercial negotiation begins with the United States alone.
