Israel fights BDS movement as pro-Palestinian campaign gains global support

During the summer, more than a dozen performers backed out of Israel's Meteor Festival after headliner Lana Del Rey canceled.

Scientists, academics and even fruit fans have backed BDS: Grape exports to Europe from the Jordan Valley in the West Bank have fallen by 80 percent since 2007 because of boycotts, according to the head of the regional council there.

The election of BDS supporters Rashida Tlaib and Ilham Omar to Congress and cover from senior senators indicate that the movement has reached a “tipping point,” according to Omar Barghouti.

The Progressive Except Palestine Problem

The Jewish community has a special responsibility to fight Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, says Marjorie Cohn.

There is a false equivalency between criticizing Israel and being anti-Semitic. Any criticism of Israeli policy is labeled anti-Semitism, even though many Jews—including members of Jewish Voice for Peace, Jewish Center for Nonviolence and IfNotNow—oppose the occupation.

The BDS movement is not anti-Israeli, as it targets the policies, not the people, of Israel. And actions against Israel’s policies, including BDS, do not equate to anti-Semitism.

National Emergencies, and More from CRS

There were no less than 30 “national emergencies” in effect as of February 1, according to a tabulation prepared by the Congressional Research Service. An additional 21 national emergencies that are no longer in effect were also identified by CRS.

Under the National Emergencies Act, a declaration of national emergency can be used to activate presidential powers that would otherwise be unavailable. President Trump has suggested that he could declare a national emergency in order to begin construction of a “wall” along the U.S. border with Mexico without congressional authorization.

McKinney Treatment: Valor of Cynthia; the Courage Obama Pretended to Have

Let Cynthia’s story serve as a moral of sorts, those who actually try to stand up to the system of corruption and graft in DC have no chance in hell to remain in office. While we are led to believe that the struggle within our government is between “left” and “right” and between Republicans and Democrats, in reality both wings in DC work in concert to perpetuate immoral wars, unjust foreign policies, and unfair economic policies. Those who try to speak against these depravities that take place in DC on a regular basis are either quickly defeated—as opponents are given millions of dollars to overwhelm any elected official who dares stray too far from the plutocratic orthodoxy—or some scandal is unearthed about them as the media is set against them like rabid dogs. In the worst case, those who speak truth to power meet an early demise.

Ernie Fitzgerald Remembered

My long time friend and colleague, the legendary A. Ernest Fitzgerald (AF bio), passed away a few days ago at the age of 93 after a long illness.

I first heard about Fitzgerald at the very beginning of my career in November 1968, when he testified — or in his words, “Committed truth” — to Senator Proxmire’s Joint Economics Committee on the huge cost overrun on the C-5A transport.

Why It’s Time to Revive Charles R. Crane’s Legacy in the Age of Trump

Charles R. Crane, may considered as probably Russia’s closest friend in U.S history, become much suspicious of media coverage of the Russo-Japanese War in America, which resulted in a letter to the editor of the New York Times and where he expressed the following words:
