Stuxnet cyberattack by US a ‘destabilizing and dangerous' course of action, security expert Bruce Schneier says

Schneier calls Stuxnet ‘mistake' for US, argues world needs to tackle cyber-arms control

Network World, June 18, 2012

Revelations by The New York Times that President Barack Obama in his role as commander in chief ordered the Stuxnet cyberattack against Iran's uranium-enrichment facility two years ago in cahoots with Israel is generating controversy, with Washington in an uproar over national-security leaks. But the important question is whether this covert action of sabotage against Iran, the first known major cyberattack authorized by a U.S. president, is the right course for the country to take. Are secret cyberattacks helping the U.S. solve geopolitical problems or actually making things worse?

Bruce Schneier, noted security expert and author, whose most recent book is “Liars and Outliers,” argues the U.S. made a mistake with Stuxnet, and he discusses why it's important for the world to tackle cyber-arms control now in an interview with Network World senior editor Ellen Messmer.

SLIDESHOW: Worst data breaches of 2012 — so far

The question is going to be debated whether Stuxnet was a good tactic to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon by sabotaging its facility through a malware attack in a covert action that was ultimately discovered. In an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News last night, former National Security Agency director, retired Gen. Michael Hayden, said he thought it amounted to “taunting Iran.” Based on the mix of military leadership, governmental leadership and ethical questions it raises, is Stuxnet a suitable approach?

ROBERT STEELE:  Bruce Schneier is wrong.  This is not something that can be micro-managed.  The UN is largely worthless, and so are most international organizatiions (with several being totally toxic).  The only solution to cyber-security is going with Open Source Everything.

HOPE Number Nine Call for Hackerspaces seeks participation

Keynote announced!  The Yes Men will talk about their approach to hacking corporations and saving the world.  See the press release at 2600.com.

About HOPE

HOPE Number Nine will be taking place on July 13, 14, and 15, 2012 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. H.O.P.E. stands for Hackers On Planet Earth, one of the most creative and diverse hacker events in the world that's been happening since 1994.

We're planning three full days and nights of activities, including more of the provocative and enlightening speakers that the HOPE conferences are known for. In addition, we have access to a massive amount of space to put together all sorts of hacker projects and assorted fun stuff. In the past we've had huge hackerspace villages, film festivals, Segway rides, lockpicking villages, a wide variety of vendors, art installations, live radio, vintage computers, robots, ham radio installations, electronics workshops, book signings, and the country's biggest supply of Club-Mate.

Now imagine all of that happening right in the middle of New York City, across the street from Penn Station and down the block from the Empire State Building. It seems impossible, but with the hard work and dedication of our huge volunteer staff, we're able to pull it off. You can also become part of the magic, whether by attending or volunteering to help run the event with us. We also encourage attendees to submit ideas for talks or to suggest projects that we may not have ever thought of before.

We'll be adding more information to the various sections of this site as it develops. Please explore and spread the word!

Robert Steele: Beyond the Internet of Things Lies the Internet of Open Costs and Open Source Everything — the Panarchic Internet

Advanced Cyber/IO, Ethics
Robert David STEELE Vivas

I've known Dr. Vint Cerf since 1992, and it is with enormous regard for him personally — and the culture of sharing and shared decision-making that he and other Internet pioneers fostered — that I take note of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and the fact that it now makes possible the Internet of Things.

This article, scouted by Berto Jongman, merits a close reading:

The Internet, IPv6 and a World of Abundance

What the article does not touch upon is in my view urgently in need of reflection, and that is the Internet of Open Costs and Open Source Everything.

The author, Dominic Basulto, writes:

When devices and sensors can be hooked up to the Internet, it means they can start sharing information: “Soon, companies will be able to perfectly match product demand to raw materials orders, streamlining supply chains and minimizing waste to an extraordinary degree. Efficiency goes through the roof.”

There is one truly severe flaw with that view.  IPv6, if applied in this manner, will accelerate and deepen the existing manner in which we do business–one author calls this The Myth of Digital Democracy.  We will, as Dr. Russell Ackoff put it, be doing the wrong thing righter.  Absent transparency and truth, absent the full integration of Dr. Herman Daly's pioneering specification of how “true cost” of anything must include water used, child labor used, environmental degradation impacts, toxins imparted to end users and unwitting bystanders, and so on, IPv6 will extend the information pathologies I have identified with the help of many others, and it will broaden the chasm between rich and poor, informed and ignorant.

What is required now is a conceptual architecture for IPv6 that demands that true costs be embedded in every thing.  It is now possible to create digital identities for the same product coming from different locations during different points in the life cycle of the producing facilty.  It is now possible for a product to “acquire” a complete history of its ingredients, storage, transport, handling, exposure to excessive water or sunlight or other “triggers.”  In short, it is now possible to demand Open Everything, starting with Open Costs.

Lacking within what passes for dialog about global Internet governance are the ethics of IPv6.  The core question we should be asking is how one imbues IPv6 with ethics so as to create an information ecology that holds all humans in any production process accountable for the true costs of what they are about.  IPv6 is a newborn.  It lacks ethics and it lacks a sense of integrity in the holistic sense of the word.  Now is the time to have this discussion.

Something new is moving, coming alive in London and it’s powerful. Similar to any big change in nature, it started in a way noticeable only to relatively few but have no doubt, it will grow fast and wide.

Whether you attended one in 12-day/12-seminar series on The Emergence of a Commons-based Economy or join us at the next gathering, you will not only learn about how you can reclaim the commons in your life and work, but also, contribute to the tide that will raise the boat of all commoners.

You are warmly invited to bring your dreams, questions, enthusiasm to co-creating a Commons-based society, one commons at a time.
