The power of open source lies in the ability to build upon others’ work, and good documentation is the key to making this happen. The goal of open source documentation standards is to facilitate a collaborative framework which encourages others to contribute to a common pool of human knowledge.

Open product development has the potential to transform the economic system by making widespread collaboration possible. If there are easy mechanisms for viewing and updating open product documentation, products can evolve rapidly under the hands of many contributors. However, several obstacles often stand in the way of contributions and improvements. Below is a list of problems and possible ways to approach them.

The Complete Problem Statement

Huh?

Why have 121,000 antelopes in Kazakhstan suddenly dropped dead?

Just three weeks ago, there were thought to be about 300,000 saiga roaming the Kazakh steppes. Now, nearly 121,000 carcasses have been discovered.

An estimated 300,000 saiga roamed across the Kazakh steppes on May 11, when the first dead antelope was discovered. By May 27, nearly 121,000 carcasses had been found in three huge areas of their usual habitat, Agriculture Ministry officials said.

U.N.: More Than Half of World's Countries Spawning Jihadists

A highly disturbing new report from the United Nations asserts that more than half of the world's nations are now producing jihadist fighters to join the ranks of terrorist organizations in the Middle East. More than 25,000 mujahideen have joined the al-Qaida network and the Islamic State (ISIS) in recent years, creating an “unprecedented” and long-term threat to international security, according to the U.N. The report, prepared by the U.N. Security Council's special permanent committee for monitoring Islamic violence, “amounts to one of the most bleak and comprehensive assessments of the global foreign fighter phenomenon compiled yet,” the Financial Times stated. The authors of the report said their findings are based on detailed evidence from 27 intelligence and security services from around the globe.

Richard Stallman and Phil Zimmerman underline key concerns with tech sector

Two of technology's most pioneering developers have strongly criticised the current state of the industry, warning that the right to encryption is doomed and that users are exploited by the software that they use.

Open sourcerer Richard Stallman has painted a very bleak picture of today's technology and communications environment, describing proprietary software as “malware”.

Stallman, the founder of the free software movement, perhaps not surprisingly has a very jaundiced view of proprietary software, and of Microsoft Windows especially. “What kinds of programs constitute malware? Operating systems, first of all. Windows snoops on users, shackles users and, on mobiles, censors apps,” he wrote in a newspaper editorial.
