Huh?

Rove's final Electoral College prediction:

“Without twelve toss up states (MN, NV, CO, IA, WI, MI, OH, PA, NH, VA, NC, AND FL), Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are tied at 191 each.

“I predict Mr. Romney will win FL (29), NC (15), VA (13), NH (4), OH (18), IA (6), CO (9) and Mr. Obama will get MN (10), NV (6), WI (10), MI (16), PA (20).

Came across these references — John F. Lehman, the 600-ship SecNav under Reagan, is one of Romney's advisors.

2012-11-02  Both Obama and Romney Proposals Don't Meet Navy Requirements (USNI Proceedings)

2012-10-22  When It Comes To The U.S. Navy, Numbers Matter (John Lehman at MittRomney.com)

A strong Navy is not a drain on our economy, it is its foundation.

2012-10-22 How Big Should The U.S. Navy Be? (NPR)

2012-10-07  Mitt Romney’s Big Plans for the U.S. Navy (DefenseNews)

Among the new details he revealed: Plans to create an 11th carrier air wing, one for each aircraft carrier. F/A-18 Super Hornet strike fighter production would continue beyond 2014. The amphibious fleet would be built up to the Marine Corps’ requirement of 39 ships. An entirely new, battle-group-deployable frigate would be procured, along with a ballistic missile defense ship.  The campaign has pledged to build more submarines and destroyers, and production of the littoral combat ship (LCS) would continue.

. . . . . . . .

First, we’d continue the littoral combat ship, and we’d begin a battle group-deployable frigate program that would replace the FFG 7s [frigates]. And we would increase the numbers per year of the destroyers, and we would go for a missile defense ship that is optimized using an existing hull form, for the new Air Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), which really won’t fit in the existing Arleigh Burke class.

We would also include getting up to the accepted requirement for Marine amphibious lift, so there’d be an increase in amphibious ships. The exact mix as between the different types, whether we go all for the LSD [landing ship dock replacement] versus the LHA+ [new assault ship] or some other mix, that hasn’t been fully fleshed out yet. But there will be an increase in amphibs.

Yoda: Dynamic Causation vs. Systemic Causation

Got Crowd? BE the Force!

With them, force is.

STARTING POINT:  Tom Atlee: Systemic Causation & Sandy

IDEN A:  I like the distinction between direct causation and systemic causation.  However, I would prefer a general conception of causation.  I would say that ideas about causes assume a stable world.  We assume that what happened in the past will happen in the future.  But if the world is changing (i.e., global warming, sea level rise), causation changes (i.e., frequency or severity of storms).  To plan for the future requires knowing how the world is changing, which is difficult when our actions are changing the world.  We will live in a world we have not experienced previously.  We can imagine how change will proceed, but we can be certain that we will not be 100% correct.  I very much agree with Tom's emphasis on the importance of language and, in this case, systems thinking.

IDEN B:  It sounds like we must be master mariners in a great sea, understanding the theory of change, knowing that it can change at difference paces across different functions, and always being sensitive to the implications of weather patterns, recognizing there is only so much we can do BUT also recognizing that the more prepared we are the easier our path…..building smaller homes that are hurricane proof, having self-contained water and energy systems, etcetera.

Owl: Dewey Clarridge of Iran-Contra in Benghazi — Part of the Stanley Inc. Set Up or Just Crummy Business as Usual?

Who? Who?

Here Raimondo inserts a few more pieces into the jigsaw puzzle picture of what happened at Benghazi. His most notable observations are on the fly-by-night “Blue Mountain” security firm guarding the doomed diplomatic staff there and on Duanne Clarridge, former CIA case office and an alumnus of the covert Contra war, and who leads his own private version of the CIA with a presence in Libya:

The Mystery Behind the Benghazi Attack

Were the Obama administration and Ambassador Stevens set up?

by

Anti-War.com, November 05, 2012

EXTRACT:

The security arrangements for the Benghazi consulate, and indeed for all our operations in Libya, are under scrutiny, and one detail is being seized on: the hiring of a small and little-known outfit, Blue Mountain Security, based in the UK, to guard the Benghazi consulate.

. . . . . . .

Blue Mountain, described by UPI as “leading the way” for foreign mercenaries in Libya, found such a partner: the Eclipse Group, according to several news accounts. However, Eclipse isn’t “local,” not by any stretch of the imagination: the Eclipse Group is Duane Clarridge’s “private CIA,” which up until recently had a $6 million DoD contract — withdrawn after Eclipse embarked on a campaign to prove Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s drug addiction. After the cut-off of Pentagon funds, Clarridge — one of the Iran-Contra defendants, indicted and later pardoned — found undisclosed “private donors” to run his gang of international cowboys.
