The “Saving of Humanity” framed by “Sinking of the Titanic”

Rising sea of discontent engendered by warming climate of opinion

Neglected signals of systemic negligence

The agreement reached at the UN Climate Change Conference (Paris, 2015) constituted the epitome of authoritarian excellence and expertise — like the RMS Titanic in 1912. It was witness to gatherings of the best, the brightest and the most wealthy — as with the first class passengers on the Titanic. It was also witness to a high degree of exclusivism — as with the lower classes in steerage on the Titanic — despite claims of a particpatory process (Akshat Rathi, This simple negotiation tactic brought 195 countries to consensus, Quartz, 12 December 2015).

The ‘electronic Pearl Harbor’
Eighteen years ago I was the first to use that term publicly. It was the wrong analogy then. Not anymore.

The phrase became a touchstone in the long national argument over cybersecurity, for better or worse. I was not the author of the phrase. That honor goes to a dear friend of mine, retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Tom Marsh, who had just led a national commission looking at cyber vulnerabilities. Tom came to my office to summarize the findings and used the Pearl Harbor metaphor.

Islamophobia is creating a global police state

It's a neocon-fabricated “state of emergency” built on demonizing Muslims

Hitler built a German police state by demonizing Jews (and Slavs, Gypsies, communists, modern artists, and lots of other folks). Lenin and Stalin built a Russian police state by demonizing “the class enemy.” Today, neoconservatives and their allies are even more ambitious. They are building a global police state – a totalitarian New World Order – by demonizing Muslims.

Good facilitation can help us hear each other in ways that free up our collective energy for change. Here is a provocative story about how nonviolence activists can use that power – and the spirit with which it needs to be used to be most effective.

Listening for Change: A remarkable essay by a remarkable colleague

Rosa Zubizarreta and I have been colleagues for more than two decades. She was part of a group in the early-mid 1990s that critiqued drafts of a book I was writing on co-intelligence. Years later, she was the driving force to get my first published book, THE TAO OF DEMOCRACY, actually written, edited, and out in the world. She became my closest companion in the realm of Dynamic Facilitation and Wisdom Councils, vital tools in both our efforts. Her masters thesis on Dynamic Facilitation evolved into a DF training manual and then into her truly breakthrough book FROM CONFLICT TO CREATIVE COLLABORATION. I recommend her Dynamic Facilitation trainings whenever I can.
