Why the Online Identity & Data Ownership Debate Matters

Venessa Miemis | April 28, 2011 at 12:36 pm

emergent by design

There has been quite a bit of media attention the past week around the news that iPhones and iPads are recording and storing location data in an unencrypted manner. Apple replied that it’s not tracking iPhone location, it’s maintaining a database of surrounding Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers so the iPhone can calculate its location when requested.

Anyway, the little window of raised awareness and interest in data mining and privacy compelled me to want to write a bit about it.

I’ve been exploring many angles over the past few years of how humanity and our technologies are co-evolving, – how social media tools are offering us new ways to collaborate, to see ourselves through different lenses, to intentionally evolve our consciousness, and to explore new forms of value exchange.

I was invited to participate in the Internet Identity Workshop in Silicon Valley next week, and the Privacy Identity Innovation conference later in May, so my new learning objective has been to get a grasp on online identity and personal data ownership.  It’s really quite fascinating, and there is a real sense of urgency for awareness to be raised around what’s happening and what it means.

I'm told this story is in every newspaper and on television in Afghanistan.  Most Afghans believe it to be true.  Basically, in spite of the Administration's posturing, Pakistan would become the governing power in Afghanistan…..The Administration's statements show a clear lack of understanding about this region….

Pakistan Tells Afghanistan: Expel the Americans

ByAhmad K. MajidyarNational Review Online

Thursday, April 28, 2011

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Pakistan's leaders “bluntly” told Afghanistan's president “to forget about allowing a long-term U.S. military presence in his country,” and urged him instead “to look to Pakistan–and its Chinese ally–for help in striking a peace deal with the Taliban and rebuilding the economy.” According to Afghan officials, at an April 16 meeting in Kabul in which the leaders of Pakistan's military and intelligence also participated, Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told Pres. Hamid Karzai that “the Americans had failed them both,” and that it was time for Kabul to choose “alternative allies.” The Pakistani delegation also outlined a number of demands to the Afghan leader. Afghanpaper.com, quoting an unnamed Afghan official, lists Pakistan's demands as:

Obama's “New” Birth Certificate, What's WRONG with IT?

By Candace
Apr 27, 2011 – 6:19:56 AM

Hi Everyone, Obama realized his supposedly real birth certificate today after years of refusal and coverups.  This should have been required for him to even run for office.  Now, being his Father is from Kenya, he is still not a natural born citizen, both parents must be citizens (and not dual citizens) of this country. Case closed right there, but lets continue.

US Intelligence & Policy on China & Pakistan Lack Consistency & Common Sense (i.e. Integrity)

Corruption, Cultural Intelligence, Government, Military
DefDog Comments....

Right-Sizing the US Military–Doug Macgregor sparked some discussion out this way.  Combined with New Army Chief of Staff: Out of Touch? NEW: Blistering Bullshit Flag Waved from Afghanistan and so many other related posts at Phi Beta Iota, here are some “inconsistencies” that are obvious to all of us on this side of the world.

From East-Asia Intel.com:

Clapper said during a hearing March 10, when asked which state has the intent to be the greatest U.S. adversary: “Probably China.”  …  “If the question is pick one nation state,” he said, adding that both Russia and China potentially pose a mortal threat to the United States.

Meanwhile……

The commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific said last week that he did not agree with the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that China poses the most serious national security threat to the United States.

And finally,

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused Pakistan's intelligence agency of a having a longstanding relationship with Haqqani militants targeting U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Chuck Spinney Inquires: Is Politics Bullshit?

Corruption, Cultural Intelligence, Government
Chuck Spinney

The US is fighting three wars (either losing them or stalemating at best), its economy teeters on the cusp of a double dip recession, the distribution of income is the most skewed of all the advanced countries, and this is what dominates politics — and to think, we were brought up to hold the decadence of the Roman circuses in contempt.

Obama releases birth certificate to ‘end silliness'

The Guardian World News 4/27/11 9:20 AM Richard Adams, Paul Owen

Phi Beta Iota: Brother Spinney's question is rhetorical.  Politics died with the assassination of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and has been a theatrical performance ever since–over-priced, we might add.  Hybrid networks that harmonize on the basis of shared information are increasingly routing around “imitation” governments.

Most of your articles and information are very reliable and appreciated for what they are.  This time, however, it is a mix of good research (Chellis's article) and a bit of exaggeration (your friend of a friend memo.)  Chellis's article was published several months ago after she did a very thorough job of discovering the facts and assembling the story in an
engaging way.  She definitely understands the political dynamics here in Bolivia, especially the role of racial identity in the process.  I am glad you have circulated it.  It is important that the Evo fans around the world
understand that, like Obama, his promises and his actions are far removed from each other.
