Can the Internet Democratize Capitalism?

Yanis Varoufakis

International Policy Digest,

Technological fixes to time-honoured problems are all the rage these days.

Bitcoin is meant to fix money, social media are seen as an antidote to Rupert Murdoch and assorted tyrants, networked robots are to help countries like Japan deal with demographic declines etc. Perhaps the largest claim is that the Internet has helped (or is about to help) democratize capitalism. Ten years ago that claim struck me as both fascinating and dubious. So, I sat down and wrote an article about it (circa 2004). Its gist: The Internet is a wonderful leveller.

But democracy requires a great deal more than mere ‘levelling.’ Primarily, it requires political institutions that enable the economically weak to have a decisive say on policy against the interests of the rich and powerful. Ten years later, I am re-visiting this question, under the shadow of a global crisis that made it even harder to convert an e’Demos into genuine e’Democracy. What follows is an updated version of the original paper.

The Internet’s toughest assignment: To put Demos back into Democracy

Owl: Jeb Bush vesus Hillary Clinton?

Bush or Clinton: Will America's Only Choice be a Presidential Dynasty?

After the inevitable disaster of having a dynasty in office, maybe Americans will want to roll it all back to before 1776, and just have a King or Queen in charge, screw democracy.

Which Dynast will win, Jeb Bush or Hilary/Bill Clinton? Ed Ross leans towards Jeb Bush in this article:

“Polls had New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ahead of the Republican pack and Democratic odds-on favorite Hillary Clinton until orange cones on the George Washington Bridge stalled his campaign bus. This far out from November 2016, there is time for perhaps a dozen other Republicans to take his place. One of them is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Assuming he could win the Republican nomination, is the country ready for a third Bush president?

Google will explore bringing Fiber to 34 new cities including Portland and Atlanta

Google just announced that it's invited cities in nine metro areas across the US to explore “what it would take” to bring its Google Fiber gigabit internet service to more locations. “People are hungrier than ever for faster Internet, and as a result, cities across America are making speed a priority,” Google says. “We've long believed that the Internet’s next chapter will be built on gigabit speeds, so it’s fantastic to see this momentum.” Google says up to 34 cities in all could potentially receive Fiber service. The nine metro areas where those cities are located include:

The Dream vs. the Kleptocracy

Here's a strong motive for open source warfare — the model of warfare that has become the hallmark of 21st century conlfict, from potest movements to fullscale insurgencies.

It's the driver of the recent conflict in Ukraine.

A conflict we're going to see much more of.  A struggle between the people that want the opportunity to earn some prosperity, and those that want to take all of it.

In other words, a growing number of people around the world now want to make the American Dream their own.

Unfortunately, they face a kleptocracy of government, business, and finance that wants to prevent that.

Here's one story from that fight.  One that you should know.

It's the story of a young man that pursued the Dream, only to have it stolen away from him.

I think this is a pretty good assessment concerning what is coming in food prices.

15 Reasons Why Your Food Prices Are About To Start Soaring
MICHAEL SNYDER – ZeroHedge

Did you know that the U.S. state that produces the most vegetables is going through the worst drought it has ever experienced and that the size of the total U.S. cattle herd is now the smallest that it has been since 1951? Just the other day, a CBS News article boldly declared that “food prices soar as incomes stand still”, but the truth is that this is only just the beginning.

The Untold Story of Antiwar Conservatives

And how the truth about invading Iraq was suppressed by laptop bombardiers.

What’s missing from reminiscences of the War on Iraq is how and why the war propaganda was spread so effectively, particularly among Republicans. In fact, the refusal of most conservative media to publish contrary information was one of the reasons this magazine was founded. The American Conservative provided an outlet for many respected conservatives who couldn’t get antiwar views published.

. . . . .

Conservatives opposed to empire and war included Pat Buchanan, Scott McConnell, Charley Reese, Paul Craig Roberts, Paul Gottfried, myself, Doug Bandow, Bill Kauffman, Sheldon Richman, Leon Hadar, Allan Brownfeld, Martin Sieff, Phil Giraldi, as well as other respected leaders such as congressmen John Duncan and Ron Paul and future senator James Webb.

VIDEO: Eminem, Ice Cube and Korn Team Up with Anonymous to Call For Global Revolution
‘Everything's corrupt, everything's fucked up.'

The word “epic” long ago lost all its linguistic potency when Burger King and Hot Topic began to use it in the advertisement of their products. Yet if ever if there was an occasion to resurrect the term, it would be to describe the music video released today by elements of Anonymous along with Ice Cube, Eminem, and Korn.

They team up to splice together a nuance-eschewing, face-melting, testosterone-charged collaboration meant to incept a massive wave of action against the seemingly indomitable power of corporatist-totalitarianism within the world's leading liberal republics.
