Who Am I? Who Are We?

THE PRESIDENT: A small, secret surveillance committee of goons and thugs hiding behind the mask of patriotism was established in 1908 in Washington, D.C. The group was led from 1924 until 1972 by J. Edgar Hoover, and during his reign it became known as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. FBI agents spied upon and infiltrated labor unions, political parties, radical groups—especially those led by African-Americans—anti-war groups and the civil rights movement in order to discredit anyone, including politicians such as Henry Wallace, who questioned the power of the state and big business. Agents burglarized homes and offices, illegally opened mail and planted unlawful wiretaps. Bureau leaders created blacklists. They destroyed careers and sometimes lives. They demanded loyalty oaths. By the time they were done, our progressive and radical movements, which had given us the middle class and opened up our political system, were dead. And while the FBI was targeting internal dissidents, our foreign intelligence operatives were overthrowing regimes, bankrolling some of the most vicious dictators on the planet and carrying out assassinations in numerous countries, such as Cuba and the Philippines and later Iran, Guatemala, Vietnam, Chile, Iraq and Afghanistan.

What is the U.S. Media up to in its Coverage of Ecuador?

By William K. Black

New Economic Perspectives, 17 January 2014

If the Obama administration wanted to improve relations with Latin America the most obvious move would be to seek closer ties with Ecuador.  Ecuador has been transformed into a nation with a stable political system, a head of state reelected by enormous margins in free elections, substantial economic progress, and a pragmatic development program.  That program embraces policies that even the Washington Consensus praised that focus government expenditures on health, education, and infrastructure.  The policies also champion an idea most identified with the conservative economist Hernando de Soto – making it far easier for entrepreneurs to start new businesses.  President Correa is the leader who continues to surprise his friends and foes by taking steps that make economic sense even if they are identified with the “right” while keeping a relentless focus on the needs of the poor.  That focus on the poor comes from Correa’s Catholic social justice beliefs that the Pope has recently been returning to centrality.

SchwartzReport: Banks Launder Billions for Cartels but No Accounts for Legal Marijuana Vendors

Commerce, Corruption, Government, Idiocy

You have probably noticed in stories about Colorado that the newly legal Marijuana business is run on a cash only basis because banks will not provide banking services. And you may remember the piece I ran the other day about how the government secretly was in league with one of the major Mexican drug cartels. Th! at led me to wonder whether the banks also had a secret deal. And, once again, a little digging turned up evidence that this was the case.

This makes the hypocrisy of the entire War on Drugs even more blatant and its inherent racism even more evident. Nothing about the War on Drugs is what it appears, except the destruction of hundreds of thousands of families and the endless incarceration of Black and Brown kids.

Big Banks Launder Hundreds of Billions of Illegal Drug Cartel Money … But Refuse to Provide Services for Legal Marijuana

Long story at link below is front page of today's WaPo  and is a compelling one.  In electronic version, there is also video.

One family, two sacrifices: In a war few Americans fought, the Wise family would pay an awful price | The Washington Post

IMHO, story showcases two key points:

1.  After 9/11, the military and intelligence community went to war while America went to the mall.  Score a failure for the Bush Administration.

2.  While I certainly neither present nor involved and at the risk of both speaking ill of the dead taking issue what Leon Panetta said at the time, the Chief of Base at Camp Chapman (Khost), Afghanistan was unqualified for the position held..  She may have been a credible analyst but she wasn't an operator by either experience or training and based on everything I've read and watching the move “Zero Dark Thirty,” I think she was personally responsible for not preventing the deaths at Khost Base, including Jeremy Wise, on that day in December, 2009.

For America, Denial Is a River in Iraq

by JP Sottile, Antiwar.com, January 18, 2014

Americans don’t know much about geography.

In 2006, three years into the bloody War on Iraq, 63% of Americans aged 18-24 couldn’t find the “target-rich” nation on a map.

To be fair, only half could find New York State on a map, so it is unsurprising that, in spite of its then-dominance of the news cycle, they couldn’t locate the principal fixation of American foreign policy on a map that still brims with U.S. military bases and deployments.

Doctorow: 2014 is When We Lose the Web

Writer Corry Doctorow may be just suffering from deep winter blues, but if not, and he's correct, his brief musings on the near future of the net are ominous:

“Try as I might, I can’t shake the feeling that 2014 is the year we lose the Web. The W3C push for DRM in all browsers is going to ensure that all interfaces built in HTML5 (which will be pretty much everything) will be opaque to users, and it will be illegal to report on security flaws in them (because reporting a security flaw in DRM exposes you to risk of prosecution for making a circumvention device), so they will be riddled with holes that creeps, RATters, spooks, authoritarians and crooks will be able to use to take over your computer and f*ck you in every possible way.”

SchwartzReport: West Virginia Atrocity Spill Shows Zero Safety Oversight in 20 Years

Here is a very important essay about the lessons to be learned from the West Virginia spill, a story that has gotten remarkably little in-depth coverage by the corporate media. I read today that the supposedly safe water trucks that have been bringing water to the people in fact having been filling from the same river downstream from where the leak occurred.

This disaster, like the Texas explosion that destroyed a town a few months back, occurred because there had been no regulatory oversight of this facility in over two decades. It is a Goebbels' Big Lie to say we have too much regulation in this country. The problem is exactly the opposite.
