Linked Open Data

Linked Open Data is a developing set of principles for publishing re-usable data sets that work at Internet scale. In this session we will explore the progress made by libraries, archives, and museums towards sharing descriptions of their resources as linked data. We will also review emerging digital humanities projects that are exploring linked data and consider the available opportunities for local digital humanities projects.

Richard Urban, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science, will lead our discussion. Richard has extensive experience researching large-scale cultural heritage aggregations and metadata. In January 2013, he will lead a week-long workshop on Linked Data at the Digital Humanities Winter Institute.

Today I had the pleasure of sitting down for a second time with Dr. Greg Newby, director of one of America's top supercomputing centers, this one in Alaska and operated by the University of Alaska.  He has some ideas about Arctic information collection, prcoessing, analysis, and SHARING that are breath-taking; I attribute this in part to his also being the current lead for the Gutenberg Project, whose founder died recently.  If there is one person on the planet that understands supercomputing, open everything, and the potential of the cloud to radcially empower all members of any M4IS2 endeavor, that person is Dr. Greg Newby.  He is in Washington until Friday morning when I drive him to the airport, and can be reached via email at <gbnewby@alaska.edu>.  Tomorrow he meets with the US State Department representative to the Arctic Council.  At this time he has no meetings scheduled with US Navy or US Coast Guard points of contact for Arctic matters and would welcome being contacted directly.

I confess to being delighted by how he has adapted my eight-tribes concept and also with his diligence in pursuing a global initiative to make all data available via a MOSAIC real-world “game” to be created by Medard Gabel, co-creator with Buckminster Fuller of the analog World Game, and architect of both the existing UN Earth Dashboard, and the conceptualized digital EarthGame that needs only a staff of six and an annual budget of $3 million to be created.

Digital Bridges for Learners

Ana Cristina Pratas

CristinaSkyBox, 27 September 2012

Although I have always tried to reach out individually to students, whether through their preferred learning style, topics which related to their social environment and interests,  or with activities they enjoyed in class, never has there been a point in time when the emphasis of learning was so learner-centred as now.  With the increasing implementation of mobile tech, learning is revolving around the student: with their iPads, they can work calmly through their iBooks or create their own book with materials which they choose and are relevant to both themselves and their course work.

In turn, this also has implications for the teacher – new roles in the classroom and often new approaches and patterns in teaching. However, with all the freedom of learning, there are hiccups which also occur. How willing are students to (initially) take on the responsibility for their learning, particularly when they have grown up in cultures where rote-learning was customary or where they were comfortable in shifting responsibility of their learning outcomes to teachers?

All freedom demands responsibility and accountability – characteristics which students are not always ready to take on board.

Freedom is also a learning process and bridges need to be built, put in place for both learners and teachers.

Moving Towards Tallinn: Drafting the Shape of Cyber Warfare

Ashley S. Boyle, September 2012

Introduction

On September 3, 2012, the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence1 (CCD COE) released a draft of the Tallinn Manual on the International Law Applicable to Cyber Warfare.2 The document was written at the request of the CCD COE by an International Group of Experts (IGE) comprised of legal and technical experts from academic and professional backgrounds.

The resulting 215-page draft is a peer-reviewed but unofficial document that examines whether and how
existing international legal frameworks governing the use of interstate force apply in the cyber environment.

Nakoula made a notorious anti-Islam film — yet he had worked for an Islamic terrorist

I ask readers to pay special attention to the Eiad Salameh connection, which nails the theory that Nakoula worked for spooks…

Additional added note: Or does it? I've recently received information that places the Nakoula/Salameh linkage in a new light. The claim that Eiad Salameh is a PLO terrorist comes from his cousin Walid — whom some people (including Chris Hedges) have labeled a serial hoaxer. Walid, like so many of the players in this drama, hails from what we may call the “Pam Geller ring.” His accusations against Hilarion Cappucci — an aged Greek Orthodox cleric — appear to be spurious.

Still, I have received convincing evidence that Eiad is indeed a crook.

If you're confused — well, read what follows, and the context should become clear.
